Betty felt fine until the effects of her adrenalin rush wore off. Erin, the nurse who defeated Anne for the second place in the nurses’ ranking, was done cleaning her wounds. She went to the cabinet and returned with a pot containing an ointment. It was green in colour and had a strong smell. Betty was sure it would burn, but when Erin applied it, it soothed the pain. ‘What is in this potion?’ Betty did not really want to know this. She felt very uncomfortable. Talking distracted her mind from the fact that her bed was between the beds of Kirsten and Anne. Anne was awake, but had not made eye contact with Betty since they brought her into the clinic.
