Chapter 7: Fighting chance

I was close to the border when I tried to mind-link my dad, but he had a block up, I was wondering what that was about. I decided to head to the nearest border patrol outlook and as I came closer, I saw two wolf ready to start their patrol run along their side of the border. I instantly recognized the one wolf by his red fur. Andrew Hall the main ladies’ man, champion fighter, and my best friend. I sent him a quick mind-link to tell him I am about to cross the border and that we need to meet for a drink later. As he and the other wolf started running, he mind-linked me back. “Glad to have you back man, listen head over to the training grounds there is a challenge for the Alpha title going on. Some elder with a young Alpha showed up, I think he is challenging Alpha for his title.” I decided to continue in wolf form straight to the training grounds, this must be why my father has a block up, I just crossed when a high pitch scream echoed through my mind. Where the f**k are you? My little sister sounded in distress and my wolf was going crazy. I just crossed the border, what is going on the guards are talking about an Alpha challenge. Suddenly I felt a deep pain in my chest and for a moment I could not catch my breath I slowed down but only slightly. Then my little sister said the words I was not ready to hear. You need to get to the warrior training grounds now; it is Rose she challenged Grant for the Alpha title. I pushed Thor to get to the training grounds, how the f**k did this happen? Thor growled at me, this is why we should not have left her side, we needed to go after her all those years back. He was angry and wanted blood. You knew she would have rejected us, she needed space. I tried to calm him down with the same speech I have been giving him for more that 12 years. As we rounded the last few houses on our way to the training grounds her scent hits us and consumed us, hot salted caramel but the sight in front of us was not pleasing. Grant was on top of her, his canines gracing the place where our mark should sit. There is no way he is claiming what is ours he will die now. Thor shouted. We launched at Grant knocking him off her. As he rolled, I shifted mid-air getting my hand around his neck, pressing out every bit of air he had left in him. He might be taller than me, but alpha blood was running through my veins, I had him pinned against a tree pushing his skull deeper into the tree truck. Every single person was looking at me, my mother had tears in her eyes and my father and Alpha was next to me in a matter of seconds. “You need to let him go, Hunter. You of all people know you cannot interfere with an Alpha challenge. You will be punished even get the death penalty” My dad tried to calm me, but it was not working, I saw the last of the asshole’s life leaving his eyes. “Does not look like an Alpha challenge to me, this weakling was trying to mark what was MINE” I hissed through my teeth “Let him go” Alpha barked at me. I did not listen I refuse to give in to his Alpha tone, by right and blood I did not need him as my Alpha, and he allowed this piece of dirt to hurt my mate my precious mate. I could hear her heartbeat; I could smell her sent mixed with blood which pushed me past the edge. Then I heard Luna Lilly’s voice and it pulled me back to reality. I let go of Grant and he came crashing down to the floor. “You will pay for this, Elders arrest him now” Grant shouted softly but no one paid him must attention.

I watched in horror as my little girl was laying on the floor, blood everywhere. Hunter had Grant pinned against a tree; this is not how I imagined this day to go. I am trying my best to stay calm think like a Luna, we need a doctor I hear the words in my head but is stunned by the scene in front of me, I feel tears flowing down my cheeks. My little girl, get it together or give me control Lilibeth shouted at me. I retreated in for her to take control not enough to shift but enough to get done what needs to be done. “Elaine get over here, she is bleeding, and you are her best change.” Elaine became our pack doctor after the previous one retired and she was good, as Rose she made sure to get the best training before returning to our pack and taking the role, we have had Alphas from other pack come to our pack hospital for her. Elaine came over her hands were shaking she looked over Rose. Her emotions were all over the place, she was not focused. Lilibeth took her hand and looked her straight in the eyes. “You need to calm yourself darling, if we want to save her you need to be at your best.” Elaine took two deep breaths, Iker came closer to her and started rubbing her back. She closed her eyes and when she opened them, she was in boss mode. “Iker, I need my first aid kit it is in the house, she is not stable to move her yet, and our house is closer than the hospital I need you to get it.” He hesitated not wanting to leave her side, “GO I will be fine.” she told him. “Luna, I need your belt. I need to stop the bleeding caused by the bite to her calf.” Lilibeth gave me back control, I am fine and in control now. I took of the belt as Lilibeth retreated. “Why the hell is she not healing, she is an Alpha she should be healing faster than this.” Elaine mumbled to herself. Stephen came closer and stared at her blood, then he opened her eyes. “What are you looking for?” Elaine asked irritated as if he was in her way. “She has been poisoned.” Elder Brachman, this should be investigated, there is was foul play here.” He stated and everyone could hear the anger in his voice. “How do you know?” Elaine asked trying to stop blood coming out from Rose shoulder. She looked at Stephen and as if he knew what she was thinking he took off his shirt and she pressed it against the huge wound on Rose’s shoulder. “I know the signs; I have lost someone special the same way. She has all the signs of aconite poisoning.” He looked sad answering Elaine’s question. “Ok if it is aconite, we will need to give her a blood transfusion and quickly. She will not start healing with it in her system. We need to get to the hospital, NOW” Elaine said. Stephen was about to pick Rose up but I stopped him, I knew that although she was weak having her mate close to her will help her hold on. Werewolf mated can draw strength from each other and even with her unconcise having Hunter near her will give her some strength or at least some comfort. “Hunter, Rose needs you, she needs you NOW, we need to get her to the hospital” I shouted and within seconds he had her in his arms. “Hunter, we need to hurry every second she is not in that hospital is a second I have less to save her.” Elaine said as Hunter started running towards the hospital. Halfway there it seemed like Hunter was struggling to breath. “Elaine, we need to hurry, Thor says she does have must time left.” He struggled to talk, run and breath but that did not stop him. The moment the hospital doors opened, there was a team ready. Hunter was hesitant of putting her down and growled when one of the male nurses tried to take her from him. Elaine touched his arms and said “You need to let her go now, I got her, but she has no fighting chance if you hold onto her now. The pain in your chest is because of her heart that is going to stop due to the poison, I need you to let her go, give her to him, you have done your part, now let me do mine.” And with that he placed her on the gurney the staff has brought to the take Rose to the theatre.
