Chapter 4: The challenge

I watched my daughter’s face carefully while her father shouted at her. She did not have any fear in her eyes and stood up to face her father. “I, Rose Williams, challenge Grant Brock for the title of Alpha of Lake Mountain pack.” this time se articulated every word. Making sure she was heard, almost challenging him to say no again. He suddenly looked at me and was about to ask for my help when old man, followed by a very younger one walked into the dinning hall. If my memory served me correctly the younger one was Alpha Stephan Mechwell, one of Rose’s best friends but the other one I was not sure. “Rose Williams you will do no such thing, I forbit it” my husband did not even notice the guest that have just arrived. “I am sorry Alpha but that is not your choice, and you know it.” the elder man spoke. Rage was coming through our mate bond, his head snaped to the man that addressed him. “Elder Brachman” he started to walk over to the elder gentleman on the other side of the room to shake his hand. “Alpha Burke, it has been a while since the council has visited your beautiful pack.” He had a soft smile on his face while shaking my husband’s hand. “To what do we owe the pleasure, I was not...” he looked over his shoulder to me to make sure I was not expecting any council member guests, I just shook my head which made him continue his welcome speech. “Expecting your visit, is everything alright?” he tried to hide his anger, my dear mate hated surprises, and this was a big one. “Well look like I am here to oversee a challenge for the Alpha title” the elder looked at my husband. “Like I said that will not be necessary, my daughter is tired after her long trip home and clearly not in…” That is when it clicked, she knew her father better than I did at that moment, she expected him not to make her alpha, something I only suspected until this morning. And she knew he would never allow her to challenge one of the high-ranking males. In that moment I must say I was proud of my very smart girl. I got up and walked closer to my beautiful baby girl. I whispered so only she could hear "I am so proud of you honey”, she only gave me a small smile. “Elder, maybe the current and future leadership of this pack should take this discussion to our conference room to speak about all the implications of today’s haze discussions” I looked straight at my husband, he knew he screwed up in that second. “I can arrange for the omegas in the meanwhile to get a room ready for you and your young Alpha friend” Only now did my husband see the young man standing behind Elder Brachman. “Good afternoon, Alpha Mechwell, it is always a pleasure to see you.” The young alpha shook my husband’s hand, but his eyes were on my daughter and for a small second, I thought that they were pitch black.

Beta Fabian

All the pack ranked members and families with the elder walked to the conference room, upon entering there were already bottle waters set out and I must say our Luna do not waste any time with things like these. Everyone took a seat around the table. Iker and the young Alpha remained standing. There was a minute of uncomfortable silence when the Luna spoke first. “Well, I would like to start by asking who of the ranked members was aware of this situation before the announcement was made?” when no one spoke up she cleared throat. “Fine, it was only me and my Beta” her husband confessed. She looked at us disappointing. “This makes sense then, but clearly you two did not think this through or consulted with any of the other of us. There is a reason we are a team of six and not just two, we have always made decision as a team. Why have this changed suddenly?” she gave a death stare to me and her husband. “Because you did not want to make the hard decision.” Alpha was angry and everyone in the room could feel it. Luna only stared at him it was the elder that broke the silence. “Clearly the problem is the future leadership of this pack, Alpha why do not explain to us your plan.” Alpha took a deep breath and looked at his daughter first. “You see Elder, we are one of the oldest and strongest bloodlines in our history. Each alpha was stronger than the previous and the moon goddess blessed us in abundance, but I do not have a male heir and according to my father and grandfathers wishes as well as our pack laws, I must hand over leadership to a male or a female heir that was mated. Unfortunately, I think our blessings have run out as I do not have a male or mated female heir.” Rose stared at her father with so much hate at this moment. “With all due respect, I do not need a mate to do my job, which is to be the alpha of this pack.” she said the words laced venom. Her father only stared at her. It was my mate that spoke next. “Rose honey, none of us think that you are not up for the job. I am sure we can come up with a plan which does not involve a fight to the death.” She was referring to the challenge already on the table. “Alpha Burke I understand this but why the Beta son? He is not even a true alpha, but if my information is correct your gamma is a true alpha with a true alpha heir?” Alpha Stephan might be young, but he was not dumb clearly. “The Beta is next in line; Grant was also the only one that stayed after they finished with school, he committed himself to his Beta training, taking a lot of the responsibilities of a training Alpha as well. He has proven himself.” Again, an uncomfortable silence fell across the room. “It is clear that Rose want it” I heard my son’s voice. “Does that mean you are not taking what belongs to me?” Rose asked him before he could finish. “Oh no, Rose you understood wrong, I have been working for this longer that any of you true alpha brats. As you and Hunter were out getting ready to lead, I stayed at the pack and trained to lead. I will not give this honour up, but I will share it. So, my proposal to you is…” Everyone was on the edge of their seats. “Take me as your chose mate, you have yet to find yours, we can have our marking ceremony tonight with the transferal of power, you can rule next to me as Luna.” As he finished the sentence you could hear hard possessive growl.

Did Grant just propose to Rose? “Please tell me you are not considering this” I mind-linked my friend. She stood there just as surprised as me. This was not a good thing. “Rose, I know how your mate is.” I tried her again, she cannot consider this, it will break Hunter, I knew that they were mates, the day she left I already knew. “Rose.” I tried again to link her, but she put a block. All eyes were on her now. “What if Rose decided to take another chosen mate.” Stephan word was full of anger, the growl clearly came from him, wait he was not mated yet. Really moon goddess. Rose just stood there not responding to anything. Iker honey, I think they broke my friend. Can you please call my brother and hear where the hell he is. I mind-linked my mate, he needs to find Hunter before things got out of hands. “I think we need a minute gentleman” Luna stood up and moved to the door, showing the men the door. “Wait before we go, Rose need to know everything.” Alpha Stephan closed the distance between him and Rose. “Rose, I have loved you since the first moment I saw you, I think you need to know that if you chose to take a mate to lead your pack, I would like for it to be me. I am more than willing to give up my position in my pack to be your Alpha. You do not need to have a weak mate like the Beta.” With those words Grant was next to him, not being able to control his anger he threw the first punch, but the Alpha caught his fist in his hand ready to attack back. “ENOUGH” Luna Lilly shouted “Everyone out, NOW. Go and sort your man problems out in the sparing circle.” Again no one moved. “NOW” the Luna used her powerful Alpha voice, and you felt the ground shake. No one could not obey now, and everyone left the room leaving Rose, myself, and the Luna. My mom stopped at the door, she looked back at Rose as if to ask her permission to stay. Rose was still staring into the great beyond. “Rose, if you need me, I will be just outside” my mother voice was filled with tears as she wished what I wished, that the bond between Rose and Hunter was a strong as we hoped. “You can stay if you like Aunt June”. Rose looked at my mother and I saw tears in my best friends’ eyes but it was not tears of sadness, it was tears of pure anger.
