James saw it too.
A faint glow through the trees. The cabin where Sarah had lived. Empty for weeks.
"Evelyn, stay inside. Lock the doors."
"James—"
"Please."
He grabbed his rifle and walked into the darkness.
The path to the cabin was overgrown, unused. But someone had been here recently. Footprints in the mud. Fresh.
He reached the door. It was unlocked.
Inside, a single candle burned on the table.
And a figure sat in the shadows.
"Close the door, James. We need to talk."
The voice was familiar. Too familiar.
James stepped inside.
The figure leaned into the light.
Rebecca.
---
"You're supposed to be traveling."
"I was. I came back."
"Why?"
"Because I couldn't stay away. Because I need your help."
James sat across from her. "Help with what?"
"Morrison's research isn't gone. Elara lied. She disabled the failsafes, but she didn't destroy the core data. It's stored in a location only she knows."
"How do you know this?"
"Because I was there. In Switzerland. I followed you. I watched her work."
James stared at her. "You've been following us?"
"I've been protecting you. Elara is dangerous. She's not who she claims to be."
"She helped us destroy the failsafes."
"She helped you destroy the decoy. The real data is still intact. She's planning to rebuild the Network. Her way."
"Why would she do that?"
"Because she's the one who created Morrison. She's been pulling the strings from the beginning. The story about being his victim? A lie. She was his mentor. His partner. His lover."
James felt cold.
"Where is she now?"
"Somewhere in Europe. Gathering her resources. She'll be back. And when she comes, she won't be alone."
---
Rebecca pulled out a tablet.
"I've been tracking her movements. She has a facility in the Czech Republic. Hidden in the mountains. She's been building a new clone army. Smaller. More elite."
"How many?"
"Dozens. Maybe more."
"Why didn't you tell me this before?"
"Because I wasn't sure. I needed proof."
She showed him photographs. Elara, meeting with masked figures. Elara, inspecting pods. Elara, smiling.
"It's real," James said.
"Now you know."
He stood up. "We need to go to the Czech Republic."
"Not alone. She has guards. Enhancements. You'll need an army."
"Then we'll build one."
---
James returned to the main house.
Evelyn was waiting.
"Who was in the cabin?"
"Rebecca. She came back. She has information about Elara."
"Elara?"
"She's not a victim. She's the mastermind. She's been playing us."
Evelyn sat down heavily.
"How do we know Rebecca is telling the truth?"
"We don't. But we can verify her information."
Steven was already working. "The satellite images match Rebecca's claims. There's a facility in the Czech mountains. Construction began six months ago."
"Elara was planning this while she was 'helping' us."
"Looks that way."
James gathered the team.
David. Harper. Kara. Lena. Sarah.
"Elara has betrayed us. She's building a new clone army. We need to stop her before it's too late."
"How many are we facing?" David asked.
"Dozens. Maybe more. But we have something she doesn't."
"What?"
"Surprise."
---
The flight to the Czech Republic was long.
James, David, Harper, Kara, and Lena traveled under false names. Rebecca stayed behind to protect the children.
The facility was hidden in the Ore Mountains, accessible only by a narrow road.
They approached at night.
"Guards at the entrance," David said. "Four of them."
James raised his rifle. "We do this quiet."
They moved.
The first guard fell silently. The second. The third. The fourth.
The door. Steven sent the code.
Inside, the facility was smaller than the others but more advanced.
Pods lined the walls. Clones in various stages of development.
And in the center, a command center.
Elara stood at the console, her back to them.
"James. I knew you'd come."
"Step away from the console."
"You don't understand. I'm trying to fix Morrison's mistakes."
"By making new ones?"
"By perfecting the process. The clones I'm creating won't have any programming. They'll be truly free."
"They'll be your army."
"They'll be my children."
Elara turned.
Her eyes were different. Colder. Harder.
"I didn't want it to come to this. I wanted to help you. But you wouldn't let me."
"Help me? You've been lying since the moment we met."
"I was protecting you."
"From what?"
"From the truth."
Elara pressed a button.
The pods opened.
Clones stepped out. Dozens of them. Men, women, children.
But their eyes were empty. Hollow.
"Kill them," Elara said.
---
The clones advanced.
James fired. David fired. Harper fired.
Clones fell. More took their place.
Kara and Lena fought back to back.
But there were too many.
"We need to fall back," David shouted.
"There's nowhere to fall back to."
James fought his way toward Elara.
Clones grabbed at him. He pushed them aside.
Elara watched, smiling.
"You can't win, James."
"Watch me."
He reached her.
She raised a hand.
He grabbed her wrist.
They struggled.
"You're making a mistake."
"I'm correcting yours."
James pulled her away from the console.
"Call them off."
"Never."
"Then you die with them."
Elara's expression flickered.
"You won't kill me."
"Try me."
---
David provided cover. Harper threw grenades.
The clones stumbled, confused.
Kara reached the console.
"I can disable them. Permanently."
"Do it."
She typed.
The clones stopped.
Their eyes cleared.
"Where am I?" one of them asked.
"You're free," Kara said. "Go. Run."
The clones fled.
Elara watched them go, her face blank.
"My children."
"Your slaves."
She looked at James.
"You've destroyed everything."
"You destroyed yourself."
Elara's eyes glazed over. Poison. Same as the others.
She collapsed.
James knelt beside her.
"Why?"
"Because I couldn't live with what I'd become," she whispered.
Her eyes closed.
---
The facility was searched.
Records were seized. Clones were freed.
James watched the last of them leave.
"It's over," Kara said.
"For now."
"You always say that."
"Because it's always true."
---
They flew home.
The ranch was quiet.
Evelyn was waiting.
"Is it done?"
"Elara is dead. The clones are free."
"For real this time?"
"For real."
James held her.
"Let's go inside."
---
The children ran to him.
Chloe hugged his legs. "Daddy! You're back!"
"I'm back, sweetheart."
"Forever?"
"Forever."
He picked her up.
"Let's go play."
---
They spent the afternoon at the playground.
Chloe climbed the jungle gym. Lily pushed Emma on the swing. Grace chased butterflies.
Rebecca took her first steps.
James watched, smiling.
Evelyn sat beside him.
"This is what we were fighting for."
"Yes. It is."
"Was it worth it?"
James looked at his children. At his wife. At the sun setting over the mountains.
"Yes. It was."
---
His phone didn't buzz.
No messages. No threats.
Just peace.
"Evelyn."
"Yes?"
"Let's go home."
They walked back to the ranch house.
The door closed behind them.
---
In the darkness outside, the shadows were empty.
No watchers. No ghosts.
Just the wind.
The war was over.
