Lin Xinyi arrived at the gates of the Lin family villa. The estate was a display of wealth by a third-rate family desperately trying to project an aura of high-society elite.
Xinyi slipped through the side entrance, her expression transitioning smoothly back into the quiet, submissive mask she wore.
Her uniform was damp, and a faint smear of mud clung to her hem, but she carried herself with an absolute, invisible shield of calm.
The moment she stepped into the grand, marble-floored foyer, a harsh, booming voice shattered the quiet of the house.
"Do you know what time it is?!" Father Lin stood at the top of the short stairs leading to the formal dining room, his face twisted in pure arrogance and irritation. He was a small-minded man, constantly stressed by his frantic attempts to secure business scraps from the extended branches of the supreme Gu family.
To him, Xinyi was nothing more than an embarrassing stain, an illegitimate daughter he was forced to keep around for the sake of appearances, a worthless burden who brought no value to his social climbing.
Xinyi kept her eyes cast downward, her voice soft, playing the role of the timid victim flawlessly.
"Father... the rain was heavy, and the buses were delayed."
Her father was still angry. Xinyi just looked at him calmly. She was used to him yelling at her. She did not care.
Father Lin yelled at her "You always make excuses!" He slammed his hand on the banister. "You are a disappointment to our family. Your sister, Chenyi is upstairs practicing piano for a show. She is going to make our family proud. You are out on the streets like a beggar!"
Chenyi looked at her from the dining table. She was wearing a dress and had a mean smile on her face. "Father do not waste your time on her. She is nobody. She is probably late on purpose because she knows she can never be as good as me."
Her mother joined in sounding disgusted. "Look at her she is all wet and dirty. You will make a mess on our floor. Go upstairs clean up and come down for dinner. Your father has things to talk about and you need to be quiet and not embarrass us."
Xinyi just stood there. She was used to her family being mean to her. Tonight she was thinking about something else. She had always thought that she did not really belong to this family. She felt like she did not have the blood as them. It was not just because they were mean to her. Because she felt it deep inside.
She looked up a little. Said, "I am not hungry. I will not come down for dinner."
Father Lin got very angry. His face turned red. "What did you say? You dare to disobey me? I am the head of this house!"
"I am tired Father. Goodnight " Xinyi said calmly. She turned around. Walked up the stairs without waiting for him to say anything else.
Father Lin yelled at her "You girl! You think you have someone to back you up just because the Gu family was nice to you? You are nothing!"
Xinyi did not look back. She closed her bedroom door. Locked it. She did not want to hear her fathers voice anymore.
Soon as she was alone, Xinyi changed. She did not look scared or weak anymore. She stood up straight. Her eyes looked sharp and mean.
She went to the shower. Washed away the dirt snd blood on her body. She thought about Gu Jue and how powerful he was. She knew that saving him would cause a lot of trouble. She was not afraid. When it is dark she did not have to be afraid of anyone.
After her shower,Xinyi put on a black robe. She dried her hair. Went to her desk. She had a phone that looked normal but was actually a very powerful computer. She tapped on the screen. It opened up a secret program. This was her command center, where she could control everything as the hacker, "Ghost".
A message popped up on the screen. A contact icon featuring a cartoon avatar of a chubby, laughing man was flashing aggressively.
It was from Fat Jun, her primary subordinate and trusted proxy in the underground hacking world. He was one of the very few people who had access to her encrypted line, handling the administrative logistics of her secret multi-million dollar tech startup while she operated from the shadows of high school.
He was very excited and a little scared. "Boss you are finally online! I have been trying to reach you for an hour. Where have you been? I was worried that something bad happened to you." Fat Jun’s voice erupted through the encrypted earpiece, thick with excitement and a touch of panic.
Xinyi leaned back in her chair, her voice turning into a cool, melodic cadence that carried absolute authority. "I was delayed because of an emergency. What is going on?"
Fat Jun told her "There is a job offer on the underground boards. Someone wants to hire 'Ghost' to do a difficult job. They want to find someone from a place in the city."
Xinyis eyes got a narrower. "Who is the client and what do they want?"
Fat Jun said, "The client is anonymous but they are from the Gu family. They want to find the person who saved Gu Jue tonight."
Xinyi smiled a little. Gu Jue was very fast. It had only been a hours since she left him and he was already trying to find her. He did not know that the person he was looking for was actually the same person he was trying to hire.
Xinyi said, “Reject the offer."
Fat Jun said, "I already did, Boss. I knew you would not care about something like that."
Then Fat Jun got serious. "There is something Boss. Someone is looking for a DNA match from eighteen years ago. They are searching on the web and it is very secret."
Xinyis heart skipped a beat. She felt something she did not feel often. Emotion. "A big dynasty from another city."
Eighteen years ago. The year she was dropped at the Lin family gates.
“Run the match,” she said quietly. “Compare it to my profile. Tell me if they’re looking for me.”
“On it, Boss.”
Fat Jun said, "I am on it Boss. I will let you know soon as I find something."
Xinyi ended the call. Put her phone down.
She turned to the window. City A’s storm still raged outside.
The Gu family was hunting her.
A hidden dynasty was searching for her.
The Lin family thought she was trash.
They were all wrong.
She was the boss.
And soon, the whole city would kneel.
