The classroom door slid open and Teacher Wang, a notoriously strict and short-tempered middle-aged woman, marched inside. She slammed her heavy textbook onto the podium, her sharp eyes scanning the room like a hawk looking for a target.
"Open your advanced chemistry textbooks to page 142," Teacher Wang barked, her voice cutting through the residual murmurs. "Today we are covering complex organic synthesis. Pay close attention, because this material will be heavily weighted on the upcoming university entrance examinations."
The students scrambled to open their books, the atmosphere instantly turning tense and fearful.
At the back of the room, Xinyi opened her textbook to the correct page. She glanced at the equations displayed on the board. To any normal high school student, the complex molecular structures were a terrifying maze of frustration.
But to Xinyi, who had spent years mastering traditional Chinese medicine, these high school chemistry formulas were elementary school math.
A profound wave of exhaustion washed over her. Her body was still recovering from the brutal combat in the alleyway and the late-night hacking session with Fat Jun. The monotonous, droning tone of Teacher Wang’s voice acted like a perfect lullaby.
Leaning her chin on her palm, Xinyi’s long eyelashes fluttered closed. Within minutes, she had drifted into a light, defensive sleep, her mind completely detached from the academic world.
From the front row, Lin Chenyi constantly checked her compact mirror, using the reflection to monitor Xinyi’s movements. The moment she saw Xinyi’s head drop, a venomous, delighted smile flashed across her face.
‘Perfect’, Chenyi thought. ‘Let's see you survive this, you illegitimate trash.’
Chenyi raised her hand elegantly, her voice loud, clear, and perfectly timed to interrupt Teacher Wang mid-sentence. "Teacher Wang? Excuse me, I'm so sorry to interrupt the lesson!"
Teacher Wang stopped writing on the blackboard, turning around with a deep frown. "What is it, Lin Chenyi?"
Chenyi stood up, looking entirely distressed, her eyes darting toward the back of the room with a look of pure, innocent panic. "Teacher Wang, please don't be angry, but... I think my sister, Xinyi, is feeling unwell! She stayed out so late last night, and she had to walk so far to the bus stand this morning. She's... she's completely fallen asleep in class!"
The entire classroom turned around to look. Sure enough, Lin Xinyi was dead to the world, resting her head peacefully against the window glass.
Teacher Wang’s face instantly twisted into a terrifying mask of rage. She detested nothing more than disrespect in her classroom, and Xinyi was already on her blacklist thanks to the rumors Chenyi had consistently fed to the faculty.
BANG!
Teacher Wang slammed her wooden pointer stick against the podium, the loud c***k echoing through the room like a gunshot.
"Lin Xinyi!!" Teacher Wang screamed, her high-pitched voice vibrating with fury. "Wake up this instant!"
Xinyi’s eyes snapped open. There was no confusion, no grogginess, and no panic in her gaze. Her eyes were instantly sharp and cold.
She straightened her posture, looking toward the front of the room with an unbothered, frigid calm.
"Teacher Wang, please don't punish her!" Lin Chenyi cried out immediately, stepping out into the aisle and wringing her hands like a saint protecting a sinner. "It’s my fault! I should have forced her to wake up earlier this morning so she could have a proper breakfast! She’s just so exhausted from her... her late-night activities outside the house. Please give her a chance, she didn't mean to disrespect your prestigious class!"
The classmates began to scoff and jeer openly.
"Late-night activities? Yeah, probably sneaking out with guys."
"Chenyi is an angel, seriously. Still defending that trash even when she embarrasses the family name in class."
"Teacher Wang should kick her out of the elite program entirely!"
Teacher Wang’s veins were practically bulging from her forehead. She pointed a shaking, furious finger at Xinyi. "Lin Xinyi! Your sister is constantly begging for your sake, yet you sit there with that arrogant, unrepentant look on your face! Do you think because the Lin family pays your tuition that you can treat my classroom like a hotel?!"
Xinyi remained seated, her hands folding neatly on her desk. She didn't look at the furious teacher, nor did she look at her sister who was secretly vibrating with triumphant joy. Instead, she looked directly at the complicated, multi-step organic synthesis equation written on the blackboard, the one Teacher Wang had spent the last twenty minutes failing to properly explain to the class.
"Since you think my lesson is beneath you,"
Teacher Wang sneered, her voice dripping with venomous sarcasm as she tossed a piece of white chalk onto the front desk, "why don't you come up here and solve the advanced multi-chain derivative synthesis on the board? If you can't solve it flawlessly within two minutes, you will take your desk into the hallway and stand there for the rest of the semester!"
Lin Chenyi gasped softly, covering her mouth to hide her ecstatic laughter. That specific equation was an Olympian-level chemistry problem meant for university seniors. There was absolutely no way an illegitimate nobody who slept through class could ever solve it.
The entire room braced themselves for Xinyi’s ultimate humiliation.
Slowly, Lin Xinyi stood up from her chair. The cold beauty didn't show a single tremor of fear. Her uniform skirt swayed gently as she walked down the class, her steps terrifyingly calm, that left the entire classroom entirely breathless.
