The struggle

204 Words
College life was harder than Thomas had imagined. The material wasn’t difficult, but the adjustment was. He had been a soldier for so long that the world of lectures, exams, and deadlines felt foreign to him. He struggled with the isolation of being surrounded by young people who hadn’t experienced what he had. And yet, every day he pushed forward, determined not to let the past hold him back. It wasn’t easy, but the thought of Lily waiting for him at home—of the life they were building together—kept him going. One evening, after a particularly grueling week, Thomas found himself sitting on the edge of their bed, staring into space. Lily came in, sitting down beside him. She didn’t say anything at first—she didn’t need to. She just put her arm around his shoulders, offering comfort without words. “I don’t know if I can do this,” Thomas admitted finally, his voice filled with frustration. Lily kissed his temple gently. “You’ve already done so much. One step at a time, Thomas. You’ll get there. We’ll get there.” And for the first time in a long while, Thomas allowed himself to believe that it was true.
