Unlikely friendships

225 Words
As the months passed, Thomas began to form connections. There was Emily, a fellow history major, who was determined to show him that the world outside the military could be just as exhilarating. She had an infectious enthusiasm for learning and an unshakable belief in the power of change. At first, Thomas had been reluctant to open up to her, but her persistence wore him down. One afternoon, after a particularly fascinating lecture on ancient civilizations, Emily invited Thomas to study with her in the library. It was there that their unlikely friendship began. "You know," Emily said one day as they sat surrounded by stacks of books, "I don’t think anyone could have come back from what you’ve been through and just forgotten about it. It’s okay to be different, Thomas. It’s okay to struggle." Thomas looked at her, surprised by her understanding. “I thought I was supposed to be strong,” he said quietly. “That strength meant never showing weakness.” Emily shook her head. “Strength isn’t about hiding what’s inside. It’s about owning it. You’re stronger than you realize.” Her words lingered in his mind for days. And while he wasn’t sure if he would ever fully embrace her view of strength, he knew she was right about one thing: he didn’t have to fight the world alone.
