Facing the past

238 Words
A year passed, and with it, the memories of the battlefield began to fade into something more manageable. Thomas had made progress—both in his studies and in his emotional healing. But one day, he received a letter that shook him to his core. It was from his old unit. They needed him. The letter spoke of an urgent mission, of comrades who were in danger, and of the need for experienced soldiers. The request was both an invitation and a plea for help. Thomas sat with the letter for hours, his heart torn. He wanted to help, wanted to do what he had been trained to do. But he had a different life now—a life with Lily, a life he wasn’t willing to abandon. When he finally spoke to Lily about it, her eyes were filled with concern, but also understanding. “You have a choice,” she said softly. “And you need to choose what’s right for you.” In the end, Thomas made a choice that was both difficult and freeing. He turned down the request. He knew that returning to the battlefield wouldn’t heal him. It would only bring him back to a place he had fought so hard to leave behind. The decision wasn’t easy, but as he looked at Lily, he knew he had made the right one. He had finally chosen the future they had dreamed of.
