A grateful smile grew upon the elder girl’s face, and her cheeks flushed self-consciously. Mare gave her daughter’s hand a loving squeeze. “You have a fine family,” Everson said, a little more at ease. “Thank you for allowing me in your home.” The aroma had been tantalizing him from the moment he had walked in the door, and he eagerly took his first bite. Jonas was wrong about Mare’s cooking. The food was delicious, and Everson would have happily given his entire cache of coins for the meal. “Why does your planet attack ours?” Jonas asked. Mare gasped. She stepped toward Jonas, wringing her hands. “Jonas! Don’t anger him.” “I can ask any question I want. It’s my house.” The farmer’s wife looked to Everson with tremulous concern, but she had no reason to be. It was an honest question
