CHAPTER 7

MEGAN'S POV My blood is boiling right now. How dare this man? He dragged me in here like I’m some damn criminal. Like my day hadn’t been going perfectly fine until he showed up to ruin it. My eyes burn into his, the pressure in my jaw sharp enough to split bone. Xarion stands across from me, towering and infuriating, and somehow still manages to look controlled. But I see the storm brewing in his eyes. "So it was you," he says, his voice even but sharp. "You’re the one who secured the Valemont sponsorship deal for Stone Corporations." Oh. So that’s what this is about. “Are you serious right now?” I bark out a laugh, but it’s laced with pure acid. "That’s the reason you pulled me into an empty room?" His face hardens as he takes a step closer. "You must've known I’ve been fighting for that deal for years, Megan. You knew it meant everything to my company, to my pack. You got that deal just to spite me, didn’t you?" My fists curl at my sides. "I was doing my job," I lash out. "I presented the strongest pitch, and the board made a decision. Just because you wanted it badly doesn’t mean you were entitled to it." I keep my face firm, but inside, there’s a shameful hint of satisfaction. A dark, bitter part of me had wanted this. Had wanted him to feel the sting of loss the way I had felt it four years ago. Now, seeing the stunned look on his face as he realized I’d beat him, it felt good. Not because of the deal itself, but because it rattled him. Because for once, I had the upper hand. Xarion takes another step closer. "So this is revenge? Is that why you came back? To throw my life into chaos? To hurt me?" I roll my eyes. "Goddess, not everything revolves around you, Xarion." His jaw tightens, but then his eyes soften, only a little. Just enough to make me go still. "Maybe not everything," he says quietly. "But the twins? I’m damn sure they do." The words hit me like a slap. My throat tightens. I take a step back, but he follows. "I know they’re mine, Megan. I felt it. How long were you planning to keep them away from me?" “You don’t know anything," I say quickly, moving to the other side of the room like distance could shield me from the weight of his words. I need space to think. To breathe. "They’re not yours. Get that fantasy out of your head." "Tell me the truth," he pleads, his voice softer now, but desperate. "I need to hear it from you." I whirl around. "Who told you they were yours?" "The girl has your eyes," he presses, stepping toward me. "And the boy… he has mine, he literally looks like me. They’re four years old, Megan. Four. We divorced four years ago. You think I don’t see what’s right in front of me?" His voice isn’t angry now. It's broken. And Goddess help me, I can feel it. The heat of his body close to mine, the way his voice drops when he’s barely holding it together. My heart's pounding. He wants confirmation, but I can’t give it. I won’t. And I hate that it’s affecting me. So I take a breath and look him dead in the eye. "You want to know the truth?" I whisper. "You took me to the hospital. Remember that? You told Doctor Phillips to end my pregnancy. You made sure I wouldn’t walk out of that building as a mother." His entire face changes, like I’ve just punched him. Good. "That alone should be enough proof that they’re not yours," I say coldly. He doesn’t move. Just stands there, looking like he’s been gutted. Then, softly, he asks, "If they’re not mine, then who’s the father?" I freeze. He steps closer. "Tell me, Megan. If they’re not mine, then who's the father? Is he an Alpha? Or Beta?” Panic rushes through me. I didn’t think he’d ask that. "That’s none of your business," I say quickly with a lifted chin. "Just know it’s not you." "Don’t lie to me,” His jaw twitches. "You know they’re mine. You’re just scared. You’re angry. But that doesn’t change the truth. You don’t get to shut me out anymore. Not when it comes to them." "I can and I will. You don’t have the right to be in my life again, Xarion. And you sure as hell don’t have the right to come near my kids." Just then, I move toward the door, my heart racing, hands shaking. I grab the handle and pull it open, eager to get away before he says anything else that might break me. But he follows quickly. "Megan, please," he says, voice urgent. "Stop shutting me out. I need to know my pups. They deserve to know me." I walk faster, my heels striking the floor in sync with the pounding in my chest as we move through the hallway. We reach the building exit and push through the glass doors, stepping into the sunlight. I squint. I don’t care that people are staring. Let them. Let them see what heartbreak looks like in motion. I just need to get to my car. I need space. Air. Distance. "Get away from me," I hiss under my breath. "Don’t follow me." But he doesn't listen. I make it to the parking lot and spot my car. Almost there. And then… oh no. My heel snags on a crack in the pavement, and I lurch forward with a gasp. "Crap..." Before I hit the ground, I feel a firm hand wrap around my waist, catching me mid-fall. It's Xarion. I land hard against his chest as his face stops inches from mine. His cedarwood scent wraps around me like a memory I don’t want. Like the safety I stopped believing in. "Be careful," he says softly, his eyes searching mine. "I don’t want you getting hurt." I shove him away. "Don't touch me. I don’t need your help." But my traitor wolf howls inside me at the loss of contact. Rattling in my chest. And I hate it. I hate that even now, after everything, a part of me still reacts to him. Still feels him. I shove the key into the car door and fling it open. As I slide into the seat, I glance at the mirror. Xarion stands behind me, pain etched across his face, and for a second, I almost, almost, feel sorry for him. But then I remember. The hospital. His cold eyes. The way he walked out after ordering the doctor to end my pups and the way he welcomed Danielle into his arms. I grip the wheel. "Don’t come near me or my children, Xarion," I deadpan, not looking at him. "Leave us alone." His voice trembles when he replies. "You can’t keep them from me forever. I’m their father. I’ll do whatever it takes to be in their lives." I slam the door shut and turn the ignition. The engine roars to life. As I pull out of the lot, his voice reaches me just before I hit the road. "You can’t hide from me anymore, Megan. I’m going to find a way back in. To them. And to you." Tears blur my vision as I drive off, my chest tightening with every breath, my hands trembling on the steering wheel. Because I know he means it. And that terrifies me more than anything else.
