I looked up hoping to see twinkling stars, wishing for a sign that somehow all will be alright. But the sky looked bare and gloomy as if rain would soon start to pour. Which made me think about the odd similarity of what I was feeling and what the night is about to become. I waited patiently, hoping to see even the slightest glimpse of a star, even just a single star would be enough. But without warning, trickles of raindrop started to pour and my face was still tilted up, I started to get wet. But I remained fixated, still hoping to see the stars. I didn’t even realize that tears were starting to fall from my eyes, as if the rain wasn’t enough.
“You shouldn’t be doing that. You might get sick.” A voice coming from a man, startled me. He was standing just a few steps from me, holding a black umbrella. I couldn’t see his face, because my vision was a blur brought by the rain or the tears, I could no longer tell. I wiped my eyes with the back of my hand to look at the person standing in front of me. He was just a few inches taller than me, a good looking guy with blond hair that glistened in the night lights who’s probably just about age. His hazel brown eyes were looking straight at mine and judging from his expression, this guy must be thinking that I was a crazy person. We stood there just looking at each other, I was soaking wet, but the guy didn’t even bother to share his umbrella. I shivered when a cold breeze hit me, I turned around to walk away from him because I needed to find shelter. Obviously, the guy had no intention to help but just to continue gawking at me. But to my surprise, he put his jacket on me and shared his umbrella. I looked at him as we both continued to walk. “Thanks”, was the only thing I was able to mutter.
We ended up seeking shelter at a coffee shop. It was past ten o clock, so the shop was almost empty except for the bar tender and a couple making out at one of the shop’s booth. I grimaced, as I turned my gaze away from the couple. I sat at the nearest empty spot I saw. The guy who gave me his jacket, followed me in and sat at the opposite side of the table.
"You don’t have to keep me company. Thank you for everything.” I said to him. He looked at me and smiled. “I was actually supposed to come here to grab coffee.” He replied.
“Oh, okay.” was the only reply I could come up with. It was mortifying to assume that he was actually here for me.
“Well I guess I should grab that coffee.” He stood up, and went to the counter. I laid my head on the table and covered my face with my hands, in order to avoid another embarrassing moment with the person who rescued me in that pouring rain.
When I was finally sure that he left, I tilted my head back up only to find a cup of coffee laid on the table, with a note clipped on the lid. I searched the room for the guy, but sure enough he already left. I grabbed the cup of coffee and read the note.
“A cup of coffee always does the trick. At least for me. You can keep the jacket and umbrella; you need it more than I do. -Jace. :)"
I stared at the note, as tears started rolling down my cheeks. The guy was surprisingly really nice to buy me coffee and to leave his umbrella even though it was still raining cats and dogs outside. But his kindness wasn’t the reason why I was crying.
The universe must be against me to be playing this kind of sick joke. The guy’s name couldn’t be Jace too.
