Ruby
David drew his gun and held it ready as the door slowly swung open. When nothing jumped out at them, he whispered, "Anyone inside?"
Cutler peered around the corner. "No."
Nodding, he took his finger off the trigger but he didn"t holster his weapon. Cutler took that as her cue to enter the room ahead of him. He followed, closing the door.
"Watch your eyes."
David shut his eyes a second time and waited for the telltale sound of a lamp being switched on. But before that happened, he heard Cutler move across the room. There was a rattling sound, and then light. This time the brightness was more brilliant, and it took him several seconds to adjust.
"Idiots."
"What?"
"I can"t believe they"re handling these creatures without any protective gear."
