14 Maya left the room. I followed her and beckoned James. ‘Let’s go.’ We all headed downstairs. As we descended I heard a conversation taking place in the kitchen. It sounded as if a few people were involved. Maya opened the door and the talk subsided. Kabir was there, looking decidedly happier than he had been in the bedroom. His three housemates were with him along with four men, presumably under Maya’s command. Everybody was drinking coffee and it was all very convivial, like a meeting of friends in a coffee bar, pre-The Storm.
