5 Daylight was entering the cabin when I opened my eyes to see James staring down at me, his brow furrowed. Too disoriented to do anything, I lay there for a further five minutes before moving, my leg and hip registering protests. Shaking my head to clear it, I got both hands on the floor with my bad leg out in front of me then stood up shakily, wincing, using the telescope mount to steady me like a man as old as Methuselah. ‘James,’ I said, ‘where’s your dad?’ He made a gesture I interpreted as meaning that Bob had driven along the trail in the direction the bow of the DUKW was facing.
