While the Hummer was moving I borrowed Maya’s dagger and cut the lifejackets in half. Then I tied them to the brass handles at the sides of the coffin, using the drawstrings on the lifejackets themselves. This left six drawstrings dangling which I tied together beneath the coffin. The half-lifejackets were now tightly secured to their new home. My task wasn’t easy given the frantic lurching of the vehicle on its solid rubber tyres and shot suspension, but somehow I managed. Caitlin gave my handiwork a sidelong glance.
‘What the hell is that?’
Maya laughed.
‘Patience was never your strong point, Caitlin. The man said wait and see. So let’s wait and see.’
‘I want to know now.’
