48 While the Hummer was moving I borrowed Maya’s dagger and cut the lifejackets in half. Then I tied them to the brass handles at the sides of the coffin, using the drawstrings on the lifejackets themselves. This left six drawstrings dangling which I tied together beneath the coffin. The half-lifejackets were now tightly secured to their new home. My task wasn’t easy given the frantic lurching of the vehicle on its solid rubber tyres and shot suspension, but somehow I managed.
