7 And so I came at last to Winterbourne. The new island was smaller and better-fortified than the one that’d been abandoned, having a high concrete wall around it and an armed guard at the landing jetty. At least he was only armed with a musket. It meant he’d get just one inaccurate shot at me if I gave him reason to. I circled Winterbourne at a healthy distance and took The Dot ashore. The smooth grey surface of the concrete wall stood between me and the village I needed to explore. I could have done with the concealing darkness of night but hadn’t time to wait.
