The sound of my door being pushed open and footsteps entering my room stirred me awake.
I rolled onto my side and slowly opened my eyes.
“Good, you are awake.” My mother walked to my bedside and sat at the edge of my bed.
I scooted to the side, making room for her before sitting up and stretching my body.
“Good morning, Mum.”
“Good morning, my love. Are you ready for today?” She smiled at me gently before smoothing my hair backward away from my face.
Not understanding her, I squinted my eyes at her. “Ready for what?”
I tried to remember if there was any special event, but nothing came up.
On seeing my confused expression, my mother poked my forehead.
“You are unbelievable. I can’t believe you forgot what today represents.”
“Mum, just tell me already. What’s happening today?” I grabbed her hand that had poked me and let it sway sideways while blinking adorably at her.
“You really are unbelievable. What date is today?” She released her hand from my grip and glared at me. Behind her glare and tone, I could tell her playful exasperation.
‘Do you know what today’s date is?’ I asked Davina.
‘Don’t ask me. I also don’t know.’
‘Yeah, right? As if you would bother to know something as minute as a date.’ I rolled my eyes at her.
I picked up my phone from my bedside table to check the date.
“Mum, today is the fifteenth.” I dropped the phone and looked at her expectantly.
Seeing that I was still not getting it, she eyed me. “What month are we in?”
“Uhm, June?” I blinked at her.
“So…” she raised her brow at me with a slight shake of her head.
“So, what, Mum?” A pause, then realization dawned on me. “Oh… ooh. Today is my birthday. How could I forget that?” I palmed my forehead in disbelief.
“Exactly, how could you forget that? This is my first time witnessing this. Especially when it’s one of the most important ones in your life.” She slapped my back out of frustration.
“Ouch, Mum.” I scrambled away from her, avoiding her reach. “I know…I know. It was my fault. I shouldn’t have forgotten such an important day as today. Can you stop chasing me around? You already hit me. That should be enough to quench your frustration.”
I ran around my room, trying to avoid her, but she was relentless and kept chasing after me. Seeing her not giving up, I ran out of the room to create a distance between us but bumped right into my brother, Pugsley.
“Hey, kiddo, watch where you are going." He grabbed my shoulders, stopping me from bumping right into him.
“Pugsley, hold her for me. Don’t let her get away. I need to teach her a lesson so that she will stop being forgetful.” Mum was right on my heels, chasing after me.
“Oh, what have you done this time around?” Pugsley held onto my shoulders, not planning to let me go. When Mum saw this, she stopped running and walked towards us instead.
“Nothing, Pugs. I swear I didn’t do anything. Please let me go.” I gave him my best pleading look, hoping it would work on him.
“Why should I? What will I gain in return?”
This brat!
“Come on, Pugs. At least consider it, since today is my birthday. You don’t want me getting spanked on my birthday, right?” I blinked at him while pouting at the same time.
“Ugh… fine. Just because today is your birthday. There won’t be a next time.” He rolled his eyes at me before releasing my shoulders.
“Thank you. You are the best.” I smiled brightly and quickly leaned forward on my toes and placed a kiss on his cheek.
“Pugsley Addams! Don’t you dare!” My mom yelled from behind, but it was too late. He had released me from his hold, and I was already sprinting down the stairs and into the living area.
From behind, I heard my mother taking her frustration out on my brother, and a wicked grin spread across my face.
Serves him right.
The moment I stepped into the living area, I froze. It was not empty. Sitting comfortably on the double couch was a familiar silhouette; comfortably scrolling through his phone was Collins.
My face instantly burned. Here I was in thin silk pajamas that left little to one’s imagination, while he looked like he was ready to conquer the world.
What is he doing here?
When he saw me in my thin pajamas, his face flushed red, while his gaze traveled down my body before quickly returning to my face.
“Good morning," he said, his voice carrying a hint of nervousness.
I quickly crossed my arms over my chest as heat rushed to my face. “I… I didn’t… I’ll be right back.”
I fled upstairs, mortified, almost bumping into my mom and Pugsey, but didn’t stop and dashed straight into my room.
“Hey, what’s got you running?” I heard Pugs shout after me, but the response he got was the slamming of my door.
“I can’t deal with your sister. If not, she will be the end of me. Can you believe she forgot that today was her fifteenth birthday? The one where she is finally supposed to have her first shift, and she forgot it… The one where she is finally supposed to have her first shift, and she forgot about it.”
I heard my mother’s voice trail off as she and Pugs walked down the stairs.
I leaned against the door and rubbed my head, which was starting to throb.
Just great. So, this day was finally here.
‘Ugh, what’s there to worry about? Just do according to the plan.’
Yeah, right. The plan.
Then, let’s get this over and done with.
I leaned away from the door and went into the shower for a quick bath before changing into a comfortable outfit of jeans, trousers, and a cardigan. I let my hair loose, flowing down my head to my shoulders, to let it dry naturally.
Once done, I stepped out of my room and went down for breakfast. I paused in my steps when I saw my father sitting alone in the living area. I looked toward the dining area and saw my mom, Pugsley, and surprisingly, Collins, all seated at the table.
“Dad, what’s going on? Why are you here alone?”
He didn’t say anything; instead, he looked toward the dining area at a certain person before flipping the newspaper he was reading with a hmph.
I instantly knew that he was still upset about the rogue incident and still blamed Collins for it.
Sighing, I walked up to him and pulled at his hand. "Dad, you know that what happened wasn’t his fault. You can’t keep blaming him for it. You need to let go of your grudges against him.”
“Hmph, I wouldn't continue to blame him if he were so shameless as to keep bugging you up and down. He thinks because he is the Alpha’s son he can do whatever he likes and keep appearing before you as though nothing happened. I'm not as shameless as him to pretend that all is well and smile at him.”
“Shh, Dad. Keep it down; he will hear you. You can’t act rudely toward him. He is our future Alpha. What if he takes it out on you in the future?”
“Hmph, let him. What worse can he do? Bannish us from the pack? Let him. I will pack up our entire family and leave with everything we have. There are many packs out there that will willingly accept us.” His voice had increased at this point that I was sure that everyone in the house heard his declaration.
I quickly tried to calm him down. “Alright, alright, Dad. Nothing of such will happen. Please, for me today, can you accommodate him? Today is my birthday, and it's my first shift also. I don't want anything to go wrong.”
Hearing my words, he finally calmed down and took me into his arms.
"I'm sorry, little dove. I almost ruined your day because of my anger. Tell Dad anything you want; I will give you that and more.”
I shook my head at him and smiled. “Dad, I don't want anything. Can we go and eat now? I'm starving.” And to confirm my words, my stomach grumbled out loud, leaving me speechless and my father laughing out at me.
“Alright, alright. Let’s get you fed. We don’t want the birthday girl going hungry on her day.”
Laughing, we both walked into the dining area.
“Well, look who decided to finally join us. I thought you were throwing a tantrum before and claiming not to eat.” My mother mocked my daddy as soon as we entered.
I rolled my eyes and went to sit, only to realize that the only seat available was next to Collins.
I grunt inwardly at my sheer luck.
Just what I needed.
"Wow, Elly, aren’t you a hypocrite? I thought you had let go of your grievance against him after hearing the way you talked dad out of his.’ Daviva mocked me, and I chose to ignore her.
Just because I didn't want Dad having issues with him doesn’t mean I would come to like his obnoxious, entitled ass.
Upon hearing my footsteps, he turned and looked at me. “El, you are here. Happy birthday. This is for you.”
I looked at the gift; he stretched toward me, and I felt torn.
I stood contemplating whether to ignore him or not. But when I looked up, my family's gazes were fixed on me.
"Thanks."
I hurriedly snatched the gift from him and sat down.
