Chapter 8Finian wrenched from the memory, dropping the stone on the blankets with a cry of alarm. “Gilly!” His husband showed no sign of rousing, and Finian hastened to check the pulse in his neck, as Gilly had shown him how to do long ago. Gilly’s heart beat steadily, though not as strong as Finian would like. He shook his head. “Gilly, what have you done?” Gilly’s breathing hitched, and Finian waited in growing fear until it resumed again, a raspy draw of air. Tears burned his eyes. “I can’t do without you, Gilly,” he murmured, and lay beside him, gathering Gilly in his arms. He kissed his cheeks and eyes and sweet lips, fighting the terror traveling his nerves. “Why did you do it?” he asked roughly when anger took the upper hand, though tears choked his voice.
