The Cracks in the Foundation

Aurora sprinted toward the school entrance, her breath hitching in her chest. She was late—catastrophically late—and all because she’d spent twenty minutes too long trying to perfect a "natural" makeup look to hide the fatigue of moving. "Damn it," she hissed, slowing to a fast walk as she reached her classroom door. "Please let the teacher be a pushover. I can’t get a detention on day two." She took a deep breath, straightened her jacket, and slipped inside. The silence was immediate. Dozens of eyes fixed on her. Some students looked at her with genuine pity, while others—mostly the group centered around Shayla—wore smirks of pure delight. "Young lady," a stern voice boomed. Mr. Brown, a man who looked like he hadn't smiled since the late nineties, lowered his spectacles. "Are you just arriving, or were you simply taking the scenic route through the hallways?" "I—I’m just getting here, sir," Aurora stammered, her usual confidence deserting her under his icy stare. "Oh, let her in, sir," Shayla called out from the back, her voice dripping with mock sympathy. "It’s clear she had a very long night with God knows who. He must be an unfortunate soul, don't you think?" Winter and Ixora, Shayla’s shadows, erupted into giggles. "Totally obvious," they echoed in unison. Aurora’s face flushed, not with embarrassment, but with a simmering heat. She looked at the trio, memorizing their smug expressions. I’ll deal with you later, she thought. To the teacher, she bowed her head slightly. "I’m truly sorry, Mr. Brown. It won't happen again." Mr. Brown sighed, tapping his pen against his clipboard. "I’ll let it slide today only because you’re new. Don’t make a habit of it. Sit down." "Aye aye, sir," Aurora muttered, hurrying to her seat and burying herself in her notebook. An hour into the lesson, Aurora’s phone buzzed in her pocket. She glanced down, expecting another annoying notification from Warren. She was ready to silence it with a frustrated groan when she saw the preview of the message. Her heart didn't just skip a beat; it seemed to stop entirely. It wasn't Warren. It was a message from her brother, Kayden, sent in their family group chat: Dad’s been in a bad accident. Hospital. Now. The world blurred. Without a word to Mr. Brown or a glance at the whispering students, Aurora shoved her supplies into her bag and bolted. She ignored the teacher’s startled shout as she sprinted out of the building, her only thought on the man who had doted on her since she was a baby. The hospital smelled of antiseptic and filtered air. Aurora found her mother, Sophie, pacing the sterile hallway like a caged animal. Sophie looked pale, her hands trembling as a doctor in a white coat approached her. "How is he, Mark? Please tell me," Sophie begged, grabbing the doctor's arm. Dr. Mark placed a steadying hand on Sophie’s shoulder. "Sophie, Noah is a fighter. And you know I’ve been his best friend for years—I’m not going to let anything happen to him. I’m handling his case personally." "Thank you," Sophie whispered, her voice breaking. "We’re moving him to the theater for an operation now," Mark explained, his expression turning serious. "His vitals are stable for the moment, but the internal injuries are significant. Surgery is the only way to ensure he stays that way." "Do whatever it takes," Sophie insisted, her voice regaining a spark of maternal steel. "Operations, specialists, whatever. I’ll clear every expense. Just save him." "I’m going in now," Mark nodded, turning toward the double doors. Aurora finally reached her mother’s side, her eyes wide and stinging with unshed tears. "Mom! Mom, tell me he’s going to be okay," she gasped, throwing her arms around Sophie. Sophie held her daughter tight, burying her face in Aurora’s hair. "Dr. Mark is taking care of him, honey. He’s the best. He promised me he wouldn't let your father go." Aurora squeezed her eyes shut, praying that for once, being a "spoiled" girl meant she didn't have to learn what it was like to lose the person who spoiled her most.
