I returned home with my heart pounding. Sergio, sitting next to me, was no different.
Sergio groaned, "He’s scary."
I couldn’t argue with him. “The human police almost showed up. We’d be all over social media if that had happened.”
“We’d be a sensation and a huge scandal.”
“He could wipe out our Pack in an instant,” I said worriedly.
Sergio nodded. “He has five times as many as we do.”
I looked at the ring on my finger. A gift from Marco Reyes.
Sergio watched me. “Whose ring is that?”
“Marco’s.”
He was surprised. A little jealous, but it felt strangely out of place. Sergio is my best friend. “I haven’t been able to take it off since earlier. I don’t even know when he slipped it onto my finger.”
We arrived home, and no one was there. It always happens—my parents are always gone somewhere during the day.
Sergio closed the door behind me. “You’re alone again.”
“Yeah. It’s normal,” I replied flatly.
“Have you heard the latest rumor?” asked Sergio, sitting on the sofa.
“About what?”
“Javier Zapata. The Pack Reyes’s eternal enemy.”
Who doesn’t know the Zapata Pack? They’ve thought they were the greatest for the past two hundred years. But twenty years ago, the Reyes Pack defeated them.
“They haven’t been seen in twenty years. They’ve become legends. Forget about them,” I said as I poured the coffee.
I sat across from Sergio, who still wouldn’t let go of the previous topic.
“I’ve heard another rumor.”
I rolled my eyes. “You’re just like Felisitas—you love to gossip.”
“It’s about you. Don’t you want to hear it?” Sergio asked, raising his eyebrows.
I shook my head. I looked out the window where the sky had suddenly turned cloudy, and rain was about to fall.
“There’s a rumor saying you were actually meant to be Javier Zapata’s mate.”
I spit out the coffee from my mouth. “What?! You’re crazy if you believe a rumor like that.”
“I heard it from my grandmother. She never lies.”
“Maybe your grandmother’s memory was little blurred,” I said, brushing it off.
“Maybe, maybe not, but there’s one more thing. Apparently, his parents once said they’d return when you’re twenty-two, and you two would get married.”
I fell silent for a moment. My body froze. “You’re joking, right?”
Sergio shook his head. “Don’t worry, I’ll make sure he doesn’t lay a finger on you if that happens.”
***
That evening, I didn’t go down to eat with the others. Pablo still hadn’t shown up.
I locked myself in my room. I turned off all the lights and opened the window wide so the rain-filled air could flow in.
Just as I was lying down and about to fall asleep, a very familiar voice spoke up.
“Why aren’t you eating, Carlota?”
It was Marco’s voice.
I turned around. He was on the windows and slipped inside with ease. His feet touched the floor without a sound.
I sat up immediately. “Why are you here?”
“I wanted to take you out for dinner. Did you forget?”
I remembered. “You were joking earlier today.”
“I never joke, beautiful.”
I covered my nightgown with the blanket. “You crossed the perimeter; this is Pack Alvarez territory.”
“No one noticed I crossed it. Your pack isn’t very good at guarding its territory.”
“You'd better leave now before I scream.”
“Scream? Your parents would only go hysterical if they found you with an alpha.”
I closed my eyes. “You’re the one looking for trouble. I won’t tell anyone. Now, go.”
Marco walked over casually. He crouched beside my bed. “You smell so good. Do you realize that?”
I looked into his eyes. So mesmerizing. “What do you want?”
“Dinner, as you promised.”
I pulled the blanket tighter around me. “I can’t. I’m not allowed out at night.”
“Why? Oh… does this have anything to do with you being a Luna de Diamante?”
I didn’t need to answer him.
Marco pulled back the blanket.
I started to scream, but he covered my mouth. “Shhhh… stop screaming.”
I obeyed him. Because I couldn’t overpower him if he used physical force against me.
Marco looked me up and down. His pupils dilated. “Then I want to sleep here tonight.”
My eyes widened. I shook my head.
Marco let go of me when he saw I wasn’t going to do anything.
“You’re crazy,” I whispered.
Marco took off his leather jacket and lay down, pulling my body down with him.
My heart felt like it was about to burst out of my chest. “Marco!”
Marco held me so tightly I couldn’t move. “Relax, beautiful. Isn’t this what you wanted?”
“No,” I replied firmly.
He brought my face closer to his. Our noses touched.
“I’ve always watched you from afar. Now I can be this close to you,” he said, breathing heavily.
“You’ve been watching me? We’ve never talked before today.” I replied nervously.
His finger touched my lips. “You never knew. I’ve always known where you were.”
What did he mean? “Do you often cross the perimeter?”
“I can do whatever I want. Like right now,” he teased.
I tried to break free from his embrace, but it didn’t work.
“I’m going to sleep here until morning.”
“What if Pablo finds out?” I snapped.
“Pablo isn’t around. I can’t even smell Pablo within two kilometers of here.”
He was so arrogant. “I’ll ask one more time. What do you want? We, the Alvarez family, have nothing.”
“The Alvarezes have you.”
Me? I haven’t even become a werewolf yet.
“Answer seriously.”
“I’m serious,” he replied with a small laugh. “You smell so good, and this is very dangerous.”
I burst out laughing. “The most dangerous person in this room is you. Not me.”
He pulled my face closer again. His lips were just one centimeter away from touching mine.
“You don’t realize how intoxicating Carlota Alvarez is.”
“I haven’t fully become a werewolf yet,” I said, staring at his dark red lips.
He inhaled my scent through his nose. “I can’t wait any longer.”
“What do you mean?”
“This.”
He kissed my lips with an incredible hunger. Bringing a warmth I’d never felt before.
“Marco,” I said, my voice full of whimpers.
“Shhh… just enjoy it. It’s just the two of us here.”
He kissed me again. His hands quickly wrapped around my back.
“Stop,” I pleaded, my voice too weak.
“You sound like you really don’t want to stop.”
My hand unconsciously touched his chest. So strong and broad.
“Yes, touch me wherever you want. I’m not going anywhere.”
He was ‘punishing’ me; I couldn’t resist.
He lifted my nightgown until my thighs were exposed.
I held his hand. “Please, stop.”
“I’m the one in control here, not you, beautiful.”
Under his intense, passionate gaze, I melted instantly.
“I’ve wanted to touch your skin for a long time.”
He touched my thigh very gently.
My breathing became irregular.
“Your parents have kept you locked up like a ‘golden bird’ that mustn’t be touched.”
Yes. That’s true.
He touched me even deeper. “But now you’ll be mine. I’ve waited too long.”
Marco pressed his body against mine, shifting our positions so they were vastly different from before.
“We’re going to have fun, darling.”
He kissed me again with even more brutal intensity.
