Chapter 23 DAY 10 Alex sat still as the car slowed down at yet another check point. “Your identity cards,” a soldier said with a hushed voice. He was holding a big stick. Alex dipped his hand inside his breast pocket and took out a white plastic card; he collected that of Akaliza who was seating close to him at the back seat and passed it to Fred who handed it over to the soldier. “Hmm…Hutu, I see… who is Alex Eke?” the soldier asked, pronouncing Alex’s surname wrongly. “I am” Alex answered, poking his head out through the window. “Your surname sounds odd,” he said, squeezing his face in an unpleasant manner.
