Selene- The Other Rider

641 Words
I knew early on that this subway ride was going to be neverending. I watched the blackness fly past the windows, thinking stupidly that maybe I would see something eventually. But, somewhere deep inside me, I knew that I wouldn't. I was alone on this ride. I was by myself in this strange world. And I would die here. “ Begin and end,” I whispered. Footsteps sounded. I whirled in the direction of the sound. I was alone like I had been for who knows how long. I got up and started towards where I thought the noise had come from. Maybe I imagined it. I was probably going crazy in this place where time and space didn't seem to exist. I leaned against one of the rails, closing my eyes. “Open and close,” I whispered, holding on to the lyrics of a familiar song. “I'm in the middle of this..” A sob fought its way through my chest. I squeezed my eyes as tight as they would go, willing the tears to not come. The confusion had left long ago. Now, there was only panic and despair. I was all alone. “I'm trying to make me right.” My head slowly raised and my eyes opened. I turned towards the voice. On one of the benches was a man who was otherworldly, to say the least. He was leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees and his chin on his fists. He was blonde, but I could tell it wasn't his natural color. His eyes were dark blue, almost gray, the color of a summer storm cloud. And they were clear, the clearest I'd ever seen. Like he didn't have a past nor a future to bother him. I looked around, wondering where he had come from. “I love that song.” He told me. “Not many people enjoyed it when it came out, but I think it's a masterpiece.” “Who are you?” I asked. “Where did you come from?” A small smile hinted at his lips, and then it was gone. “I'm Caleb. Just another traveler with no set destination.” “What does that mean?” I asked. He stood up. Caleb was tall and lanky like he was a model. He walked to the other end of the car and leaned against the wall. His eyes watched me as I stared at him, wanting an actual answer that made sense. How could he have just appeared here? Could people come and go from this place like any other? “I'm on a plane on my way to America,” Caleb said. “I really hate flying, but I told my best friend I wanted to come with him. And it took a lot to convince him.” He walked over to the door. “He doesn't know much about the Void. I know everything about it. I wasn't going to let him get killed for being reckless.” “Why would he get killed?” I asked, starting towards him. “And what's the Void? How do you know everything about it?” He looked over at me. “That's a conversation for next time.” He stuck his hand through the door. “We'll get you out of here, Selene. See you next time.” With that, the mysterious man pulled his body through the door like it wasn't there. I ran over to it to see if I could follow his lead. However, when I placed my hand on the door, I was stopped. It was solid, just like I had known it was. This was my prison. I wasn't getting out that easily. Frustrated, I leaned against the door and banged my fist against the glass of the windows.
