Chapter 6The Husband I Never Wanted

700 Words
“My father escaped prison?” I stared at Lucian like he had just spoken another language. “That’s impossible.” Lucian’s expression remained grim. “Three correctional officers are dead.” My stomach twisted violently. “No…” “He planned this.” I shook my head. “You’re lying.” Lucian leaned back against the leather seat. “I wish I was.” The SUV stopped in front of a private airfield. I frowned. “Why are we here?” Lucian stepped out first. “Because your father is leaving the country.” My body went cold. “What?” He turned toward me. “And if he leaves with that file…” His voice darkened. “Thousands of people connected to both our families will burn.” I followed him onto the private jet. “I need answers.” “You need survival.” “I’m tired of your cryptic answers!” He stopped walking. For once— he looked exhausted. Then he handed me a tablet. “Read.” I stared at the screen. My hands began shaking. Human trafficking reports. Illegal arms deals. Political assassinations. Money laundering routes. Photos of victims. Children. Women. Families. Destroyed lives. “No…” My breathing became uneven. No. My father couldn’t be involved. This had to be fake. Lucian’s voice turned cold. “Your father helped build those routes.” I nearly dropped the tablet. “You’re lying.” “He tried to shut them down years later.” I looked at him. “What?” “He wanted out.” Lucian’s jaw tightened. “My father refused.” I stared at him in disbelief. “Then why destroy my family?” His expression darkened. “Because someone inside your family restarted the operation.” Silence. “What?” “And framed your father.” I froze. My uncle. Sophia’s father. Victor. My body trembled violently. “No…” Lucian stepped closer. “Your father stole the file because it contains names.” “Names of who?” His eyes darkened. “Everyone involved.” My throat tightened. “Then why are you hunting him?” Lucian looked furious. “Because he also took evidence that could destroy innocent people.” “Innocent?” “Yes.” He looked at me intensely. “Your mother.” I froze. “What?” “She signed documents years ago without knowing what they were.” I stumbled backward. “No.” “If that file leaks publicly, she goes to prison too.” Tears streamed down my face. “My mother would never—” “She was manipulated.” My legs nearly gave out. Lucian caught me. Again. And I hated how safe his arms felt. “I hate you.” His gaze softened for half a second. “I know.” Then alarms suddenly blared. Lucian’s security rushed inside. “Sir!” “What?” “We found Mr. Laurent.” I inhaled sharply. “Where?” The guard looked terrified. “At your wedding venue.” I froze. “What?” Lucian’s jaw tightened. “That’s impossible.” The guard swallowed hard. “He left a message.” My heart pounded violently. “What message?” The guard handed Lucian a video file. Lucian played it. And I screamed. My father appeared on screen. Covered in blood. Terrified. He looked directly into the camera. “Arabella…” Tears flooded my eyes. “Dad…” His voice shook. “If you’re watching this…” He looked behind him fearfully. “…don’t trust Lucian.” I turned toward Lucian in shock. The video continued. “Everything he told you is only half the truth.” My breathing stopped. “What?” Then my father whispered— “The real devil…” He coughed blood. “…is his mother.” The video cut off. Silence. I slowly turned toward Lucian. His face had gone completely white. And that terrified me most. Because Lucian Devereaux looked like a man whose worst nightmare had just returned. Arabella’s father exposes Lucian’s biggest secret before disappearing again: Lucian may not be the true villain—his mother might be far more dangerous than anyone imagined.
