CHAPTER 4 — Soft Voice, Sharp Mind

526 Words
Celestine The law classroom was intimidating. Maraming students—mostly elite, self-assured, and sharp. Ako? Silent, taking notes in the back row. Trying not to draw attention. Professor Valerio stood at the front, a man known for his ruthless critiques. “Today, we analyze international corporate liability. Any insights?” The room went silent. Hands hesitated to rise. Even the heirs? Watching. Calculating. Judging. I bit my lip. Something nag-click in my mind as I scanned the problem. Complex, yes—but logical. “Professor…” I said softly, barely above a whisper. He raised an eyebrow. “Consider the chain of command within subsidiary companies. If the board was aware but inactive…” I paused. “…liability falls on the individuals who failed to intervene, not just the entity.” A hush fell. I didn’t know I said it loud enough until I noticed: everyone was looking at me. Even Professor Valerio froze. Then he smiled—slightly, incredulously. “Well done, Ms. Navarro. You’ve identified the subtle distinction many overlook.” A wave of relief washed over me. But my heartbeat? Rapid. I wasn’t used to standing out—especially in a room full of heirs and prodigies. --- Auren From across the room, I observed. Celestine Navarro. She spoke. Softly. Quietly. But each word hit with precision. Like a surgeon with a scalpel. I had seen many minds—brilliant, arrogant, manipulators. She was neither. Just… deliberate. Focused. Calm under pressure. Something in her reasoning resonated. I couldn’t look away. The other heirs glanced at her, some intrigued, some dismissive. I? I noticed every microexpression. Every subtle pause, every slight emphasis. Soft voice, sharp mind. She could disarm without raising her tone. Without making anyone feel threatened. And yet… she left an impression on me. Not one of power—of balance. Not loud. Not brash. But undeniable. --- Celestine I returned to my seat, heart pounding. Not from pride. Not even from relief. From the awareness… that someone had noticed. I glanced sideways. Auren Valtaros. His eyes, calm yet intense, were fixed on me. The Strategist Prince. I forced my eyes away. But the awareness lingered. The invisible thread from the hall? It tugged again. I tried to focus on my notes. Truly. I did. But the thought of being under his observation… Unnerved me. And intrigued me. At the same time. --- Auren She doesn’t know. I’m cataloging. Every reaction. Every thought that crosses her mind—barely audible, yet precise. There’s a rhythm to her intelligence. Not flashy. Not performative. But lethal in clarity. For the first time in years, I didn’t want to silence my own thoughts. I wanted to see her think. Understand her. And I realized— I wasn’t observing her as a student anymore. I was… interested. A dangerous, calculated interest. --- Later that day, the hallways buzzed with the usual chatter. Students speculated about who’d spoken so confidently. I stayed quiet. She passed by, carrying her folder, oblivious to the stir she caused. I followed—silently, unnoticed. Soft voice, sharp mind. And now, a silent curiosity bloomed between us. The game had just begun.
