Anna’s POV
My loyal maid, Hailey, was with me that midnight. I washed up and she comforted me when she noticed I was crying. I could tell she wanted to know what happened. I would be confused if I were in her shoes.
“Did he send you out of the room, milady?” Hailey wanted to know.
“No, he didn’t,” I shook my head in the negative.
“Did he insult you or… beat you up?” Hailey asked.
“No, he didn’t,” I replied again.
Now with a naughty gesture, she asked, “Was he too rough with you?”
I nodded. That was enough reason to cry, wasn’t it? For some reason, Hailey didn’t comfort me further. Who knows? She might have concluded that I was such a crybaby. Let’s be honest, it didn’t hurt that much. I cried because of emotional pain. Unfortunately, no one would understand, not even my loyal Hailey.

Laila led the maids that morning to see me. It was a tradition to greet the new Luna every morning. The maids were so enormous in number. I sent them away when they were done with the basics and only Laila remained.
“You don’t look too good, milady. Did you shed tears?” She asked carefully.
I was going to tell Laila all about it since she had experience. She would have counseled me properly but I remembered what she said yesterday. She told me not to trust anybody. That must include her.
“I’m fine,” I lied. “I shed tears truly but those were tears of joy.”
“Were they?” Laila sounded amused. “I have heard from the Alpha’s ladies about how good he is at pleasing women. How was it?”
“Splendid…” I lied again. However, I couldn’t go through with this. I had to stop lying. “It was short and painful.”
“That’s not splendid,” Laila muttered.
“Surely not!” I told her without mincing words. “He was drunk and everything that happened was the exact opposite of what I was taught by my tutors.”
“The first time is always like that,” Laila reassured me.
“Coming from a virgin like you, huh!” I teased her. I began to laugh now and Laila turned towards me, shock written on her face.
“How did you know? Do you have the gifts of a seer?” Laila asked curiously. She looked really serious too.
“I heard the maids gossiping about you,” I replied. I paused for a second and added, “Don’t punish them. They didn’t lie, you know.”
“I thought it was my little secret. I never knew everyone knew. You came yesterday and you already know today. Just beautiful,” Laila shook her head regretfully.
“I didn’t hear the reason why you remained a virgin though,” I said calmly. “As far as I know, butlers are not forbidden from getting mated. There must be a reason why you choose not to. You are beautiful so I’m sure you had suitors.”
“It is a long story, milady. A pitiful one too, one I haven’t told many people…” Laila replied. She began to walk and I followed her.
“By ‘not many people’, how many do you mean exactly?” I asked calmly.
“Maybe ten, maybe thirty. Something within that range…” Laila said shortly.
“You made that sound grand. Many people already know!” I laughed. I followed Laila closely. The garden was in sight. There was no better multitasking than this. I was walking with the cool breeze blowing softly, the scenery was beautiful, and I was listening to interesting gossip.
“I had a crush on Alpha Jamie’s father…” Laila began to narrate. “His father loved me too but we remained apart since we seemed to be worlds apart. I was his personal maid and nothing more. He treated me well even until the day he died.”
I smiled, “How did you know he loved you?”
“He told me,” Laila blushed. It sounded like the greatest achievement of her life. “It was on his sickbed though. I wanted him so much that I even seduced him a number of times. I wanted to be his concubine.”
“Really?” I began to laugh. I never imagined such for Laila. Even now, she looked like a naive teenager who just fell in love. The smile on her face as she talked of him was a reminder of how love could never die completely.
“He was a disciplined man. He never took advantage of my love for him. He respected and protected me. He did enough,” Laila muttered. “After his death, I began to rise through the ranks. He cleared the path for me in reality.”
“When did you become the butler?” I asked curiously.
“During the reign of Alpha Jaime’s uncle. I’m sure you know the history,” Laila said shortly.
“I do,” I smiled. “Everyone does. The older brother of Alpha Jaime succeeded his father but after his death, their uncle took the throne forcefully. Afterwards, Alpha Jaime led a rebellion and became the Alpha.”
“Their uncle wasn’t a bad man. He was the one who promoted me,” Laila explained.
We were in the garden now. I admired the flowers, their beauty and fragrance.
“You wanted me to trust no one…” I looked at Laila carefully. “I might be unable to follow your advice.”
“I’m not surprised,” Laila sighed.
“If I can’t trust anyone, I think I might end up isolated. I didn’t grow up like that, you know,” I said carefully. “I will try to trust only a few people. How about that?”
Laila laughed, “You make it sound like I can change your mind.”
“You can’t!” I replied and turned towards her. “Can you be the second person I trust?”
Laila didn’t reply for some time. Afterwards, she looked at me calmly. She must have truly decided.
“I will,” Laila replied. “However, who is the first person?”
“My maid,” I responded. “Hailey.”
