The temple disappeared beneath them.
Stone.
Dust.
Darkness.
Ronan reached desperately through the air.
“Seraphina!”
Their fingertips brushed.
Then—
A surge of silver light exploded between them.
Everything went black.
Ronan slammed onto cold stone.
Pain shot through his injured side.
He forced himself to his feet.
“Seraphina!”
Only his own voice answered.
The chamber was circular, illuminated by floating blue flames.
Ancient symbols covered every wall.
In the center stood a single pedestal.
Upon it rested a black crystal.
As Ronan took one step forward, a familiar voice echoed around him.
“Strength without trust…”
“…is weakness.”
The voice belonged to Orion.
Or at least… a memory of him.
“This is the First Trial.”
“You may leave only by facing what lies within.”
The crystal began to glow.
Dark mist poured from its surface.
It wrapped around Ronan’s body.
The chamber vanished.
He was twelve years old again.
The training grounds of Moonridge.
His father, Alpha Darius Blackthorn, stood over him.
“You hesitated.”
Young Ronan struggled to stand.
“It was only a pup.”
“It was a vampire.”
“It wasn’t attacking anyone.”
His father’s expression remained hard.
“Mercy gets wolves killed.”
Young Ronan looked toward the frightened vampire child hiding behind a tree.
She couldn’t have been older than eight.
She was crying.
“Please…”
“I don’t want to die.”
Darius raised his sword.
“Finish it.”
Ronan couldn’t move.
His hands shook.
The memory blurred.
Then shattered into darkness.
Meanwhile…
Seraphina awoke inside another chamber.
Unlike Ronan’s, hers resembled the throne room of House Vale.
The room was silent.
Empty.
Until footsteps echoed behind her.
She turned.
Her younger self stood there.
Perhaps ten years old.
She was smiling.
Running toward Lord Lucien.
“Father!”
Young Seraphina wrapped her arms around him.
Lucien gently lifted her into his arms.
“I brought you something.”
He handed her an ancient necklace shaped like a crescent moon.
“You must always protect this.”
“Why?”
“Because one day…”
His smile faded.
“…everyone you love will try to take it from you.”
The memory shifted.
Years passed in seconds.
Young Seraphina stood outside a prison cell.
Inside…
A wounded vampire begged for mercy.
“He helped werewolves escape,” a guard said.
Lucien looked at his daughter.
“What should happen to traitors?”
Young Seraphina remained silent.
Lucien handed her a dagger.
“If you hesitate…”
“They’ll think you’re weak.”
The vision froze.
Adult Seraphina stared at the dagger in horror.
“I remember this…”
She had buried the memory years ago.
She had refused to kill the prisoner.
Her father had done it instead.
From that day onward…
He had never looked at her the same way again.
Outside the trials…
Lord Lucien stood before the Moon Mirror.
His soldiers searched the ruins.
Adrian approached.
“They’ve disappeared.”
Lucien nodded calmly.
“The temple chose them.”
Adrian frowned.
“We should destroy the mirror.”
“No.”
Lucien placed one hand upon its frame.
“If they survive…”
“They’ll become exactly what I need.”
Elsewhere…
Hidden in the shadows of the temple…
The hooded mastermind watched silently.
Another figure stepped beside them.
“The Alpha and the princess entered the trials.”
“Good.”
“And if they discover the truth?”
The hooded figure laughed.
“They’ve only seen the beginning.”
“The real truth…”
“…would destroy them.”
Back inside the First Trial…
Ronan’s vision returned.
The crystal floated before him once more.
Its voice echoed through the chamber.
“What is the greatest chain?”
Ronan frowned.
“My enemies?”
“No.”
“My fear?”
“No.”
He closed his eyes.
Then he thought of the vampire child from his memory.
Of Seraphina.
Of everything he’d been taught.
Slowly, he answered.
“Hatred.”
The crystal cracked.
Silver light flooded the room.
A doorway appeared.
“You have passed.”
At that exact moment…
Seraphina faced the same question.
“What is the greatest prison?”
She looked down at the dagger from her memory.
Then whispered,
“The lies we choose to believe.”
Her crystal shattered as well.
A second doorway opened.
Both stepped through at the same time.
They emerged into another chamber.
For a moment, relief crossed both their faces.
“You’re alive,” Seraphina said, unable to hide it.
“I could say the same.”
She noticed the wound on his side had begun healing again.
“The magic poison…”
“It’s fading.”
Before either could say more, the Moon Mirror flared to life.
A new inscription appeared across its surface.
The Second Trial
Only one heart may survive.
The temple doors slammed shut.
A deep growl echoed from the darkness behind them.
Two pairs of glowing eyes slowly opened.
Then four.
Then ten.
Ronan stepped in front of Seraphina, claws extending.
She drew a slender silver blade from beneath her cloak.
Whatever was coming…
The temple had no intention of letting them leave together.
