One Heart, Two Souls

The cavern fell silent. No one spoke. No one moved. The Keeper’s words echoed through every corner of the prison. “If one of you dies… the other dies as well.” Ronan looked at Seraphina. She looked back at him. Neither knew what to say. A thousand-year war had suddenly become deeply personal. If the werewolves killed Seraphina… They would lose their Alpha. If the vampires executed Ronan… Their princess would die beside him. The Blood Moon Bond had made peace no longer an ideal. It had become a necessity. Malachar was the first to laugh. A slow, satisfied laugh. “Do you see now?” “I’ve already won.” Lord Lucien’s crimson eyes burned with fury. “You planned this from the beginning.” “Of course.” Malachar spread his arms. “The Bond forces your two clans together.” “But hatred runs too deep.” He looked at the gathered warriors. “The moment they learn the truth…” “They’ll tear each other apart trying to prevent it.” Fear spread through both armies. A vampire captain whispered, “If the Alpha dies…” “Our princess dies.” A werewolf elder answered, “If the princess dies…” “Our Alpha dies.” Confusion turned to panic. Weapons slowly lowered. The Hollow King’s voice rolled through the prison like thunder. “They fear the bond…” “They always fear what can end them.” The obsidian chains wrapped around the prison snapped one after another. Another piece of the ancient seal broke apart. The mountain shook violently. Dust poured from the ceiling. “We’re running out of time,” Morgana warned. The Keeper struck the stone floor with the black staff. A circle of silver light spread across the cavern. “You cannot defeat the Hollow King by force.” Ronan frowned. “Then how?” “The Covenant was forged from three relics.” He pointed toward the shattered Moon Mirror. “You have awakened the first.” “The Heart of the Pact.” He turned toward the darkness beyond the prison. “The second relic is called the Crown of Ash.” “It lies within the Sunless Cathedral.” “And the third?” Seraphina asked. The Keeper’s expression grew solemn. “The third relic has been lost for nearly a thousand years.” “It is known only as…” ”…the Fang of Dawn.” Before anyone could ask another question— A scream echoed through the cavern. Everyone turned. Lyssandra staggered backward. A black blade protruded from her chest. Blood stained her white robes. Behind her stood a hooded assassin. No one had seen them arrive. The assassin twisted the blade free. “The last witness…” “…must finally die.” Lyssandra collapsed. Seraphina ran toward her. “No!” The assassin leaped backward, disappearing into the shadows. Ronan started after them. “Wait!” But they were already gone. Seraphina knelt beside Lyssandra. Blood spread across the stone beneath her. Lyssandra’s breathing was weak. She grasped Seraphina’s hand. “So much like…” “…your mother.” Seraphina blinked. “My mother?” “You have her kindness.” Tears rolled down Seraphina’s face. “Please don’t die.” Lyssandra smiled faintly. “I’ve had…” “…a thousand borrowed years.” She reached toward Ronan. “Come here.” He knelt beside her. With trembling fingers, Lyssandra removed a silver ring from around her neck. Inside the ring was an engraving. A wolf. And a bat. Standing beneath the same crescent moon. “This…” “…was mine and Cassian’s.” She placed it into Ronan’s hand. “Promise me…” “…don’t let our story…” “…become yours.” Her hand fell limp. The cavern became silent. Princess Lyssandra Vale… The woman whose supposed death had started the war… Died at last. Even Lord Lucien lowered his head. For the first time in centuries, no one saw a vampire lord. Only a man mourning the sister he had lost twice. Suddenly, the silver ring in Ronan’s hand grew warm. A beam of light shot into the ceiling. Ancient runes awakened across the cavern. The Keeper looked up sharply. “No…” “The ring was a key.” Stone groaned. Hidden doors began opening throughout the prison. From every passageway came heavy footsteps. One… Then dozens. Then hundreds. The Hollow King’s ancient army had been asleep for a thousand years. Now they were waking. The first warrior stepped into the light. Its armor was black crystal. Its eyes burned crimson. It drew a sword older than the war itself. Then another appeared. And another. Within moments, an entire legion filled the tunnels surrounding the cavern. The first warrior raised its blade. In a voice devoid of life, it declared, “Protect the King.” Behind Ronan and Seraphina, Gareth slowly drew his sword. Lord Lucien unsheathed his own. For the first time in history… Werewolves and vampires stood shoulder to shoulder. Not as friends. Not yet. But against an enemy that threatened them all. And in the darkness beyond the army… Two crimson eyes opened. The Hollow King… Had finally risen from his throne.
