First Knock

Malem's POV

I heard a knock on the door, I went out to check but there was no one. I guess it was my boredom that was getting the best out of me.

I went back and laid on ny bed. I groaned loudly , not in agony or pain or anger. But sheer boredom.

I allowed my mind to drift, I was so worried about my new life here. Making friends, being the new kid and all, I hated being the new kid. I hope I did not do anything to cast  and become a laughing stock.

Cast: it means to disgrace one's self

Laughing stock: someone that every one mocks.

I was yet to talk to Mum about getting a new Sim, or maybe I should just ask Mr rude face about it. He seemed to be in a better mood ever since our conversation in the garden.

I needed to talk to Bisandu, and Nankur ,I did not even have the strength to start thinking of all my friends and telling them how I am doing here.

I checked my box to see how much money I had saved, I converted all my naira to Pounds, I went to the bank and changed all the money I saved for university to Pounds since I was not sure if we were ever coming back. I had enough money to buy me an IPhone Xs Max, I smiled and kept the money back inside my box as I laid happily on my bed.

Then I heard a knock on my door, I went to open it and I saw Mara standing on the other side of the door.

" Hey" I said happily, as I deep down wondered what she was doing by my door.

" Hi, So I was thinking, I could show you round the house, since you got lost earlier" she said shyly but also thoughtfully

" Yes Sure, why not, I am almost dieing in here from boredom" I exaggerated.

" Owww, you could come join me down stairs whenever you are bored after my chores" she offered nicely after a good laugh at what I said

" Ok Thanks, I will come around more often" I said happily

" Yeah, I will start describing the mansion from this side" she started with a genuine smile on her face, then I nodded and came out of the room and closed my door behind me.

" Of course this is the darkest side of the house, it basically has no windows in the passage just doors, this side is most occupied by the young master, I can't say why he likes things dark but I heard he can be a very private person sometimes and nobody is allowed to this side, well until you came along, he has a musical room where he plays his musical instruments and a library, a little cinema and the rest are rooms for where his friends sleep when they come for sleep overs" she said as she pointed to each door and what was in it. We tried to go in but the doors were locked to our disappointment.

Then we went down the stairs and showed me the Laundry room , house Cinema, Out door area, sports area outside, Library, Garden and many other places I cannot recall.

I really had pity for the maids who ckesned the mansion because it was too huge. We went round the Mansion and I noticed the house had so many passsges, like a maze, I knew I was going to get lost again.

Maybe I should always walk around with a loaf of bread so I could leave a trail with crumbs just like Hansel and Gretel.

After she showed me round the house , we went to the maids quarters in the house, they had a small parlour in the house where they could easily sit down and relax.

It looked so beautiful and it was for the maids, it was more beautiful than all the parlors we had in our different houses while in Nigeria.

We sat down and watched Tv, as she asked questions about me and I told her more about me.

" So you are like African " she asked curiously as she scooted closer to me her eyes widening in excitement.

I laughed then I answered her.

"Yes and No" I said then she furrowed her brows at me, then I continued..

" Yes Africa is Continent and I am Nigerian and Nigeria is one of the Fifty five countries that are under Africa" I explained further.

" Owww okay, I just assumed that Africa is like one place" she said

" No it is not, we have more specific description and belongings, even in Nigeria, we have 36 states and each state has different local governments and each local Governments have different tribes and even among the tribes there is more specific descriptions from location of your village" I tried to explain to her in the most simple way possible

" Wow ok I am lost, I do not even understand a single part of it, okayy let me try and see if I have gotten it, so the hierachy is from Continent to Country then from country to state, and from state to Local Government and From that it is to Tribe and from tribes to location of village" she said she attempted.

My eyes lit up as she got it perfectly well, I clapped for her in excitement as she grinned widely at me

" I can't believe you got it well" I praised her

" I am intelligent,I know" she bragged as she whipped her hair and we both laughed.

Then my mum came in with a little frown on her face. I groaned inwardly, what have I done now.

" Mum?" I asked sounding a little worried

" I was looking for you, searching this place for you is as hectic as hell, I see you have started making friends" she said the former with a bigger frown on her face and the latter with a little smile as her eyes went to the direction of Mara.

" Yeah" I replied with a smile before I continued . " She was just showing me round the house" I said politely

" Well that is very nice of her to do" she said, as she pulled me out of the house maids quarters and into the guest room lounge into her room.

Then she sat me down on her bed as she handed me an IPhone 11 Pro, I could not collect it, I looked back and forth from her face and down to the phone and then back to her face. Whattttttttt the hell was going on here.

" Mum" I said but not in worry , in excitement I needed her to tell me it was not a prank or something. Crazy things could be happening before my eyes. Whatttt

" I know right, I could not believe it at first but then here it is, Mr Gary bought us Phones each with Registered sims under our names and he also gave me an advance payment with extra so that we could shop for things, he also got you enrolled in one of the best High schools in the area, you will be going for an interview soon, just for formalities and you will resume after the school break" she said excitedly as she handed me the phone.

" Really, I can't believe it, "  I said in excitement.

" Yes so after this you should go and thank him, he was saying something about traveling tomorrow, so go drop this in your room and you can go and thank him" she advised me.

" Ok Mum I will, let me go and drop this in my room quickly" I said as I kissed her cheek and dashes out of the room and went up to my room.

I quickly placed the phone on my bed as I went back down and made my way to the west side of the mansion where Mr Gary's Office was located.

I got there took in a deep breathe and I knocked on the door after I checked the clock for the time.

" Come in" he said calmly from inside. I opened the door and got in as I closed the door quietly behind me.

" Good Afternoon Sir" I said politely as I turned to face him.

" Good Afternoon Malem" he replied curtly

" Ehmmm, My Mum gave me the Phone you got me and she also told me you arranged for me to continue high school so I came here to thank you and appreciate you for what you have done for my mum and I" I said nervously as I findled with the hem of my gown.

" It was my responsibility , and you do not have to Thank me for that, your mum has also done a lot for me, it was only polite to do something nice and thoughtful for her and you" he replied me.

" We still appreciate your efforts Sir"  I said politely and he smiled and nodded in acceptance at me

"Come and take this, " he said as he handed me a brown envelope, I went forward and collected it, out of curiosity I opened it and it was a lot of money in it.

" Ss-sss-ssss-sir, I cc-can't accept this" I stuttered as I returned the envelope to him

" No I will not collect it, You should accept it as a welcoming gift, use it to buy new clothes and other things you ladies like to do, you could even keep it for college, anything you want" he said politely as he advised me on what I could use it for.

" Wow, thank you Sir, I really appreciate it" I said happily.

" Yes and it is yours, keep it okay" he said with a smile and a wink.

" Yes Sir" I said as I smiled  understanding the wink, I was definitely not telling my mum about it. I then left the room and headed up to my room.

I opened the phone and stared at my phone with love. I was still in my love cloud when I heard a knock on my door.
