CHAPTER SEVEN — AN UNUSUAL FRIENDSHIP
Over the next few days, Camilla and Mason became closer.
What had started as a simple conversation beneath a tree slowly turned into a friendship neither of them had expected.
They talked almost every day.
Sometimes they met after class, sometimes they exchanged messages late in the evening, and whenever Camilla had free time, Mason seemed to find a way to make her laugh.
Camilla liked being around him.
He was easygoing, funny, and always willing to listen whenever she had something to say.
Mason, however, was beginning to feel something different.
To him, Camilla wasn't just a friend anymore.
He found himself thinking about her whenever they weren't together. He noticed the little things she did, the way she smiled when she was excited about something, and how he became completely focused whenever she talked about science.
He began wondering if perhaps Camilla felt the same way.
But Camilla didn't.
She cared about Mason deeply, but her feelings were different.
She saw him as someone she could trust.
Someone she could call whenever she needed help.
Someone who was slowly becoming like a brother to her.
She simply hadn't realized that Mason wanted something more.
One afternoon, their class decided to organize a small party.
There wasn't any special occasion.
They simply wanted to spend time together outside the classroom.
"Everyone is coming," Jessica told Camilla excitedly.
Camilla hesitated.
"You know I don't really like parties."
"Just come for a little while."
Camilla sighed.
"Fine. I'll come."
That evening, the party was held at a large house belonging to one of the students.
Music played throughout the house, while students talked, laughed, and moved from one room to another.
Camilla stayed close to Mason.
She didn't know many people well enough to feel comfortable around them, so having him there made everything easier.
"You actually came," Mason said.
"I said I would."
"I thought you might change your mind."
"I almost did."
He laughed.
"I knew it."
They continued talking while the party went on around them.
Not far away, Lucien stood quietly .
The Hawthornes were well known in Raven Hollow.
They were one of the most prestigious families in the town, and their wealth and influence had existed for generations.
To ordinary people, they were simply an old and respected family.
No one knew the truth.
The Hawthorne family had lived for centuries.
Lucien's father was a respected medical doctor, while his mother was a banker. They lived a quiet and sophisticated life, carefully protecting the secret of their bloodline.
Lucien was their heir.
He was also the future heir to one of the oldest vampire lineages in existence.
His family had lived for more than nine hundred years, moving from place to place whenever necessary and keeping their true nature hidden from humans.
They had recently settled in Raven Hollow.
And they intended to remain unnoticed.
Across the room, Mason noticed Lucien.
His expression immediately changed.
There was an unspoken tension between them.
Mason knew who and what Lucien was.
Lucien knew exactly who and what Mason was.
Neither of them needed to say it.
Their families had been enemies for generations.
Mason was the heir to the werewolf lineage.
Lucien was the heir to the vampire lineage.
And somehow, the same human girl had become important to both of them.
Mason looked back at Camilla.
She was laughing at something Jessica had said.
For a moment, he forgot everything else.
He smiled.
Perhaps she was beginning to feel the same way.
Perhaps their friendship was becoming something more.
But when Camilla turned toward him, there was nothing romantic in her expression.
Only warmth.
Only friendship.
She smiled at him.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah," Mason replied.
He forced a smile.
"I'm fine."
Camilla didn't notice the disappointment hidden behind his eyes.
She simply continued talking to him as if nothing had changed.
And Mason slowly began to understand something he hadn't wanted to accept.
He was falling in love with her.
But Camilla wasn't falling in love with him.
She cared for him.
Just not in the way he wanted.
Across the room, Lucien watched them silently.
His crimson eyes remained fixed on Camilla.
For reasons he couldn't explain, seeing her so close to Mason bothered him.
And the rivalry between the two ancient bloodlines was beginning to become much more complicated than either of them had expected.
