Monday morning arrived with clear skies and blooming cherry blossoms.
As soon as Kang Ji-ah stepped into the classroom, she knew something was different.
Everyone was looking at her.
Some whispered.
Others smiled knowingly.
She lowered her head and walked to her seat.
Ha-neul sighed.
"The rumors still haven't died."
Ji-ah placed her bag on her desk.
"I've learned to ignore them."
Before Ha-neul could reply, Mrs. Kim entered the classroom.
She clapped her hands.
"Good morning, everyone."
"Good morning, Mrs. Kim."
"I have an announcement."
The room fell silent.
"As part of the Spring Festival, every class will participate in the Academic Excellence Project. You'll work in pairs to prepare a presentation. The winning team will represent Haneul High at the National Student Conference."
The class erupted with excitement.
"The pairs have already been chosen."
Mrs. Kim began reading the list.
One by one, students found their partners.
Ji-ah listened quietly.
"...Yoon Ha-neul and Park Min-ho."
Ha-neul smiled.
"Yes!"
Mrs. Kim continued.
"...Kang Ji-ah and..."
She paused.
"...Han Seo-jun."
The classroom froze.
"What?"
"No way!"
"They're partners?"
Even Ji-ah looked shocked.
Seo-jun simply smiled.
"It looks like we'll be working together."
Across the room, Choi Min-seo's face darkened.
She clenched her fists beneath the desk.
Again...
Why is it always her?
After class, Seo-jun approached Ji-ah.
"Should we meet in the library after school?"
Ji-ah nodded politely.
"That works."
"I'll save us a table."
She smiled.
"Thank you."
From the hallway, Min-seo watched the entire conversation.
Her nails dug into her palms.
"This isn't over," she muttered.
That afternoon, the library was unusually quiet.
Ji-ah arrived carrying several books.
She found Seo-jun already waiting.
"I borrowed a few reference books," he said.
She smiled.
"So you're actually serious about studying."
He pretended to look offended.
"I always study."
She laughed.
"I'll believe it when I see your notes."
Seo-jun pulled out a perfectly organized notebook.
Color-coded.
Neatly written.
Ji-ah's eyes widened.
"You've got to be kidding."
He grinned.
"I told you."
She couldn't help laughing.
For the next two hours, they researched together.
To Ji-ah's surprise, Seo-jun wasn't arrogant or lazy.
He listened carefully to her ideas.
He encouraged her opinions.
When she struggled with one section, he patiently explained it.
"You'd make a great teacher," she said.
He smiled.
"I'd rather have a good partner."
Ji-ah felt her cheeks grow warm.
As evening approached, dark clouds gathered outside.
Rain began to pour.
"I forgot my umbrella," Ji-ah sighed.
Seo-jun looked outside.
"I have one."
"It's okay. I'll run."
"You'll get soaked."
"I don't want to inconvenience you."
Without another word, Seo-jun opened his umbrella.
"Then let's both be inconvenienced."
She stared at him before laughing softly.
"You're strange."
"I've been told that."
The two stepped outside together beneath the same umbrella.
The rain fell steadily around them.
Their shoulders occasionally brushed as they walked.
Neither spoke.
Yet somehow...
The silence felt comfortable.
Across the street...
Inside a parked black sedan...
The mysterious man adjusted the lens of his camera.
Click.
Another photograph.
This time, Ji-ah and Seo-jun were sharing an umbrella.
He immediately sent it to an encrypted number.
A reply came within seconds.
Enough watching. It's time to act.
The man's smile slowly disappeared.
He started the engine.
As the black sedan pulled away into the rain, neither Ji-ah nor Seo-jun noticed they were no longer just being watched.
Someone had begun putting a dangerous plan into motion.
