THE WARNING

I couldn’t stop thinking about him. Even as I sat in my first class, staring at the whiteboard, my mind kept replaying the moment in the hallway. The cold gray eyes. The arrogant smirk. The name everyone seemed to fear. Adrian Black. I groaned quietly and rested my head on my hand. Great job, Lena. First day at a new school and you already managed to pick a fight with the most dangerous guy here. “Miss Carter?” My head snapped up. The teacher was staring at me. “Yes?” “Would you like to share the answer with the class?” he asked dryly. The entire classroom turned toward me. My mind went completely blank. “Uh…” A few students snickered. “Thought so,” the teacher sighed. “Pay attention.” Heat rushed to my cheeks as I quickly looked down at my notebook. Perfect. Now I looked like an i***t too. The bell rang a few minutes later, saving me from further embarrassment. Students quickly began packing their bags and leaving the room. I was still stuffing my notebook into my backpack when someone approached my desk. “Hey.” I looked up. It was the girl from earlier—the one who warned me. She had curly brown hair and kind eyes. “I’m Maya,” she said with a small smile. “Lena.” “Yeah, I heard.” She glanced around the classroom before leaning closer. “Listen… about earlier.” “You mean Adrian?” Her smile instantly disappeared. “Yeah.” She lowered her voice. “You really shouldn’t mess with him.” I crossed my arms. “I wasn’t messing with him. He was the one being rude.” “That doesn’t matter,” Maya said quickly. “Adrian doesn’t like being challenged.” “So everyone just lets him walk all over them?” She hesitated. “Pretty much.” “That’s ridiculous.” Maya looked nervous. “You don’t understand. His family basically owns half this town. The school protects him no matter what he does.” “Fantastic,” I muttered. Just then, loud laughter echoed from the hallway. The entire classroom went quiet. Maya’s face turned pale. “He’s here.” My stomach tightened. A group of boys walked into the room. They looked confident… cocky… like they owned the place. And in the center of them— Adrian. He leaned casually against the doorframe, scanning the classroom. For a second, his eyes passed over me. Then they stopped. Locked onto mine. The smirk slowly returned to his face. “Well, well,” he said lazily. His voice was calm, but it instantly filled the entire room. “The new girl.” My heart started pounding. Adrian pushed himself off the door and walked toward me slowly, like a predator that had just spotted its target. Every step made the tension in the room grow heavier. He stopped right beside my desk. “You really didn’t listen to my advice,” he said quietly. I forced myself to meet his eyes. “What advice?” His smile widened slightly. “To stay out of my way.” Before I could respond, he grabbed the notebook from my desk. “Hey—” Too late. He flipped through the pages carelessly. Then suddenly— RIP. He tore one of the pages out. My jaw dropped. “Are you serious right now?” He crumpled the paper in his hand and tossed it into the trash bin across the room like it meant nothing. “Welcome to Silverwood High,” Adrian said. Then he leaned down close enough that I could feel his breath near my ear. “You should learn your place fast.” He straightened and walked out of the classroom with his friends laughing behind him. The room stayed silent. I stared at the trash bin, anger burning inside me. Maya whispered nervously beside me. “Lena… please don’t fight back.” But as I grabbed my bag, one thought kept repeating in my head. I’m not going to let him treat me like this. Not even if his name was Adrian Black.
