The street suddenly felt too quiet.
Too empty.
The two men stood between us and the road, their expressions cold under the glow of the streetlights.
My heart was pounding so loudly I could barely think.
“Well,” one of them said with a mocking smile, “looks like the hero isn’t here to save you.”
Maya’s grip on my arm tightened.
“Lena…” she whispered nervously.
I forced myself to stay calm.
Panicking wouldn’t help.
“What do you want?” I asked.
The taller guy laughed.
“You already know.”
His eyes flicked toward the party house behind us.
“That little pool game earlier was embarrassing.”
“So you decided to follow us?” I said.
“Pretty much.”
The other guy leaned against the car door casually.
“We figured Adrian might not like losing something important.”
My jaw tightened.
“I’m not ‘something important.’”
“Maybe not,” he said.
“But judging by the way he reacted tonight… we’re not so sure.”
Maya pulled my arm slightly.
“We should run,” she whispered.
“Not yet,” I murmured.
The taller guy stepped closer.
“You’re smart,” he said.
“But not smart enough.”
The streetlight flickered above us, casting strange shadows across the road.
I quickly glanced around.
Empty sidewalks.
Closed houses.
No one nearby.
The situation was getting worse by the second.
“Here’s how this works,” the guy continued.
“You get in the car, we go for a little drive, and everyone stays calm.”
Maya shook her head immediately.
“No way.”
The second guy chuckled.
“That wasn’t a request.”
My pulse raced.
I took a small step back.
“Adrian already won your stupid challenge,” I said.
“Yeah,” the taller guy replied. “But we never said we liked losing.”
Suddenly—
HONK!
A loud car horn echoed down the street.
Everyone froze.
Bright headlights turned the corner at the end of the road.
The approaching car sped toward us quickly.
The two men looked irritated.
“What now?”
The car stopped sharply a few meters away.
The door opened.
And someone stepped out.
I squinted through the headlights.
Then my heart jumped.
Adrian.
His expression was darker than I had ever seen it before.
He slammed the car door shut and walked toward us slowly.
“Let me guess,” he said coldly.
“You didn’t take the hint earlier.”
The two men exchanged glances.
“Well,” one of them said with a smirk, “look who came back.”
Adrian stopped a few steps away from them.
His eyes moved briefly to me.
“Are you okay?”
I nodded quickly.
“Yeah.”
Then his gaze returned to the guys.
And the calm expression on his face somehow felt more dangerous than anger.
“I’m going to say this once,” he said quietly.
“Get in your car.”
“And leave.”
The taller guy laughed.
“And if we don’t?”
Adrian didn’t even blink.
“Then this night gets worse for you.”
The tension in the air felt like it could snap at any second.
And something told me…
This confrontation was far from over.
