THE CONFRONTATION

444 Words
The street felt frozen in time. No one moved. The two men stood near their car, Adrian stood a few steps in front of us, and Maya was still gripping my arm tightly. The taller guy laughed again. “You really think we’re scared of you?” Adrian didn’t react. He simply slipped his hands into his jacket pockets. “You should be.” The other guy stepped forward. “There are two of us.” Adrian tilted his head slightly. “And?” The guy’s smile slowly faded. Adrian’s calmness was clearly getting under his skin. Behind me, Maya whispered, “This is going to get bad.” I didn’t answer. Because she was probably right. The taller guy suddenly shoved Adrian’s shoulder. “Back off.” Everything happened fast after that. Adrian grabbed the guy’s arm and pushed him away instantly. The movement was so quick that the guy almost lost his balance. The second man rushed forward angrily. “Hey!” Before he could reach Adrian, headlights suddenly flashed across the street again. Another car pulled up behind Adrian’s. The doors opened. Three guys stepped out. I recognized them immediately. Adrian’s friends from the party. One of them cracked his knuckles. “Well,” he said casually, “looks like we arrived at the right time.” The two men looked around nervously. The situation had just changed. Now the numbers were clearly not in their favor. The taller guy scoffed. “This isn’t worth it.” He pointed at Adrian. “This isn’t over.” Adrian’s voice stayed calm. “Yes it is.” For a moment, it looked like the guy might argue again. But then he shook his head and walked back to the car. The second man followed him quickly. The car engine started. And seconds later, they drove away down the street. The tension in the air slowly faded. Maya finally released my arm. “Oh my god,” she breathed. Adrian turned toward me. “Are you sure you’re okay?” “I’m fine,” I said. But my heart was still racing. “You weren’t supposed to leave the party alone,” he added. I crossed my arms. “You told me to be careful. You didn’t say I couldn’t leave.” One of his friends laughed quietly. “She’s got a point.” Adrian ignored him. He looked at me for a moment. Then sighed. “Next time, call me.” I raised an eyebrow. “Next time?” His expression softened slightly. “Let’s hope there isn’t a next time.” For the first time that night… I completely agreed with him.
