The Trap is Set

The High Chancellor’s POV There is an art to destruction. A science to dismantling a threat before it becomes a war. I had spent decades perfecting it. The breach at the vault had been calculated—efficient. No wasted movements. No unnecessary deaths. Whoever had done this was no mere thief. Which meant I already knew who was responsible. Elaris Valthera. She had been a ghost these past months, moving between shadows, stirring whispers of rebellion. I had allowed it—for a time. Rats scurried, but they did not topple kings. But now she had grown bolder. Reckless. And she was not alone. The knight troubled me more than the girl did. Xander Damaris was not a man who betrayed the Crown lightly. If he was involved, then there was only one conclusion—he was wavering. Which meant he was vulnerable. I allowed myself a small smile as I dipped my quill into the ink. A letter. A summons. A choice. By dawn, Xander Damaris would be standing before me. By dusk, he would have made his decision. One way or another. --- Xander’s POV I had been summoned. The parchment sat on my desk, the wax seal unbroken, but I did not need to open it to know what it contained. The High Chancellor did not send casual invitations. I exhaled, running a hand down my face. The walls were closing in. Elaris stood near the window, arms crossed, watching me with quiet scrutiny. "Are you going to open it?" "No need," I muttered. "I already know what it says." "Then say it." I met her gaze. "He knows." A flicker of something unreadable passed through her expression. Not fear. Never fear. But something close to calculation. "He wants to test you," she said slowly. "See where your loyalties truly lie." I clenched my jaw. He wouldn’t need to test me if I had simply done what I should have from the start. Turn her in. Walk away. Forget all of this. But I hadn’t. And now the price was coming due. Elaris tilted her head, studying me. "You could still walk away." I let out a dry laugh. "And leave you to face this alone?" "You were never meant to be a traitor, Xander," she said softly. "This isn’t your war." I pushed off the desk, stepping closer, anger curling in my chest. "Then why does it feel like it is?" The words hung between us, heavy and dangerous. Elaris didn’t look away. "Because it was never just about the kingdom." I inhaled sharply. She was right. And that was the most dangerous truth of all. Before I could answer, a knock at the door shattered the moment. One of my men entered, looking grim. "Sir, the High Chancellor has arrived. He wishes to speak with you immediately." My heart pounded once, hard. This was it. The trap had been set. And now, I had to decide if I would walk willingly into its jaws. --- Elaris’ POV I watched him go, feeling something unfamiliar coil in my chest. Xander Damaris had always been an obstacle—a challenge to overcome, a knight too righteous to bend. But now, he was something else. And that something was dangerous. Because if he chose wrong today, I would have to make a choice of my own. And I was no longer certain I could let him go.
