The First Strike

Elaris’ POV The wind carried the scent of steel and smoke. Our forces stood at the edge of the valley, hidden in the shadows of the trees. Below us, the High Chancellor’s vanguard moved through the pass—disciplined, armored, and far too confident. They didn’t expect an ambush. But they should have. I turned to Cassian. "Your men are in position?" He smirked. "We’re not the ones you should be worried about." His gaze flicked to Xander. "Your knight still playing the part of a hero?" Xander ignored him, eyes locked on the enemy below. "We strike hard and fast. No hesitation." Cassian chuckled. "Spoken like a man who’s never led an army of mercenaries." Tension crackled between them. But we had no time for old grudges. The High Chancellor had made his move. Now, it was our turn. I raised my hand. "On my command—" A horn cut through the night. The vanguard stopped. Then—chaos. Arrows rained from the cliffs. Soldiers scattered, shouting orders. And from the far side of the valley, another force emerged—not ours. I cursed. "It’s a trap!" Xander was already moving, sword drawn. "Fall back to the ridge—now!" --- Xander’s POV The battlefield was a storm of blood and steel. I cut through the first soldier, twisting to deflect another strike. Cassian’s men fought like savages, ruthless and wild—but the High Chancellor’s forces were trained. Disciplined. Relentless. We were losing. I caught a glimpse of Elaris through the fray, her daggers flashing as she weaved through the chaos. She was fearless. But we were outnumbered. A horn sounded again, and the High Chancellor’s banners rose over the ridge. Reinforcements. My blood turned cold. "Elaris—!" Too late. A mounted knight charged toward her, blade raised. She turned, eyes widening— I moved without thinking. Steel met steel. The impact sent me crashing to the ground, pain lancing through my ribs. But the knight was down. Elaris was safe. She was at my side in an instant. "Xander!" I forced myself up, gritting my teeth. "We have to move." Her gaze flicked to the battlefield. The trap had worked—we were bleeding. Losing. And the High Chancellor had planned this. Her eyes darkened. "Cassian—sound the retreat." He hesitated. "We can still—" "Now!" Reluctantly, he lifted his horn. The call echoed through the valley. Our forces broke away, vanishing into the trees. We had survived. But we had lost. --- Elaris’ POV The fires still burned when we reached the hideout. The cost of our failure was written on every face. Men lost. Supplies dwindling. Faith shaken. Cassian slammed a fist against the wall. "We walked straight into that. He played us." I exhaled sharply. "He won’t get another chance." Xander studied me carefully. "We need a new plan." Cassian scoffed. "We need an army." He wasn’t wrong. The High Chancellor had made his first move. If we wanted to win, we needed more than strategy. We needed power. And I knew exactly where to find it.
