The First Move

465 Words
The sky was black with storm clouds as I walked through the slums of Lower Velmoria, the hem of my cloak soaked in mud. The once-familiar city, where I had once been carried in gilded carriages, now loomed around me in unfamiliar shadows. I was no longer Elaris Valthera, daughter of a noble house. I was a ghost. And yet, even ghosts could whisper into the right ears. "You shouldn’t be here." The voice came from behind me, low and edged with warning. I did not startle. I had felt the presence before he spoke, the subtle shift of air, the instinct honed by weeks of learning to live unseen. I turned slowly. Xander Damaris. He was clad in black armor, a sword resting at his hip, his dark hair damp from the misting rain. He did not look like a noble’s son tonight—he looked like a wolf, something made for war and bloodshed. "And yet, here I am," I said, the same words I had spoken in my father’s chambers. His expression did not change, but there was something different in his eyes now. A deeper curiosity. He had been watching me. "You have been following me," I accused. He did not deny it. "You should be in exile," he said instead. "Or dead." I smiled faintly. "A pity, then, that I am neither." Xander stepped closer. "I don’t know what game you are playing, but you have no power, Elaris." Ah. There it was again. That underestimation. I took a slow step toward him, closing the space between us until I could see the flicker of candlelight reflecting in his storm-gray eyes. "And yet," I whispered, "here you are, warning me away. Tell me, Sir Damaris—if I had no power, why would you care?" Silence. Xander was a trained warrior, a strategist, a man who had been raised to play this game far better than most. And yet, for the second time, I had caught him off guard. Good. Because I had no armies, no wealth, no land. But I had my mind. And I had information. Velmoria belonged to the men who sat in grand halls, signing decrees and spilling blood over parchment. But the true kingdom, the kingdom of whispers and secrets, was ruled by those who knew how to listen. "I have something you want," I said softly. His gaze sharpened. "And what is that?" I stepped past him, letting my cloak brush against his arm. "Meet me at the Black Hollow tavern at midnight," I murmured. "And I’ll show you." Then, without another word, I vanished into the shadows. Let him wonder. Let him follow. The first move had been made. And soon, Xander Damaris would no longer be my enemy.
