But even love, especially one kept in the quiet corners of hospital corridors, isn’t safe from the sharp edges of reality.
It started small—just murmurs at first. A patient’s mother had seen Leo and Mikael talking in the rooftop garden. She thought nothing of it until she saw Mikael gently place a hand on Leo’s back as they parted. Another nurse, sharp-eyed and loose-lipped, noticed their locker visits often coincided. Someone else mentioned the lingering glances.
By the end of the week, it reached Human Resources.
Mikael was summoned during his break.
“There have been no formal complaints,” the department director said, his voice carefully neutral, “but we’ve had… observations. It’s important, Dr. Tan, to maintain professional distance. Especially in this environment. Discretion is key.”
Mikael sat rigid. “I understand.”
He didn’t tell Leo.
He didn’t know how. Or maybe he didn’t want to. All he knew was that he’d worked too hard, sacrificed too much to get here. He couldn’t let a relationship—no matter how much it meant—jeopardize that.
So, he did what he always did when scared.
He shut down.
He started skipping their morning coffees. Consultations became strictly professional. Conversations, when they happened, were short, cold, and clipped.
Leo noticed immediately.
One evening, after back-to-back surgeries, Mikael was heading out when he found Leo waiting in the hallway, arms crossed, eyes tired.
“We need to talk,” Leo said.
Mikael avoided his gaze. “Not now.”
“If not now, when? You’ve been avoiding me for days.”
Mikael sighed, the weight of it sinking into his shoulders. “I think we need to slow down.”
Leo’s face changed. Not angry. Just… hurt. “Why? Did I do something wrong?”
“It’s not you. It’s the hospital. The whispers. HR called me in. People are watching. I can’t afford a scandal.”
Leo’s voice cracked. “So, I’m a scandal now?”
“No! That’s not what I meant.”
Leo shook his head. “You told me you loved me.”
“I do,” Mikael said, barely audible. “But I also love my career.”
Leo took a step back. “And I don’t?”
“That’s not what I—”
“You’re pushing me away because you’re scared. Because this isn't easy. I get it, Mikael. But I can’t be your secret anymore. I deserve better than hiding.”
Mikael stood frozen.
Leo waited.
When Mikael didn’t respond, Leo turned and walked away—his footsteps echoing down the corridor like a heartbeat slowly fading.
And for the first time in years, Mikael cried.
