Vows and Vitals

285 Words
Two years later, under the soft warmth of a spring sun, Dr. Mikael Tan stood in a tailored navy suit, his hands shaking just slightly. Across from him, Dr. Leo Kim was smiling like dawn. The garden behind Leo’s family clinic had been transformed—white chairs lined in neat rows, strings of fairy lights still glowing faintly from the morning mist. Friends and colleagues filled the space, many in scrubs, some still with stethoscopes hanging around their necks. It wasn’t a grand wedding. No orchestra. No aisle runner. Just laughter, flowers, and the quiet weight of something real. Nurse Clara, who had once caught them kissing in the supply closet and swore to "never tell a soul unless asked nicely," handed them the rings. Dr. Shin, their mutual friend and an ordained minister, stood beaming at the front, holding back tears. “You’ve both healed more people than I can count,” she said. “And now, you’re choosing to heal each other—every day, for the rest of your lives.” Leo took Mikael’s hands. “For every long night,” he began, voice trembling, “I promise a morning together.” Mikael looked up, eyes shining. “For every storm, I promise shelter in my arms.” “For every silence,” Leo whispered, “I promise to listen.” Mikael smiled, a rare and open thing. “And for every beat of my heart, I promise to love you.” The garden held its breath. And then—they kissed. Not the hurried, hidden kisses they’d once stolen between shifts. This one was slow, sure, fearless. And this time, there were no whispers. Only applause. Only joy. Only the beginning.
