The old man saw her enter and said, "Sit down, don't be afraid. This will be your home from now on." His smiling face made Jennifer feel disgusted. How could he say such things?
Jennifer stood by, refusing to sit down, and asked unfriendly, "Why did you buy me?" She wasn't physically strong, occasionally falling ill, so why would that old man marry her?! Just thinking about it made her sick!
"Buy you?" Mr. Anderson pondered her words. "If that's how you want to see it, then there's nothing I can do. Why not consider it as a dowry?"
The word "dowry" sounded too pleasant, hypocritical! She wanted to say that she didn't want to get married, but thinking about the money issue, she held back, and said unfriendly, "Whatever, now I'm like a sheep entering a tiger's den!"
"Sheep entering a tiger's den?!" A sharp female voice entered Jennifer's ears. Instinctively turning her head, she saw a woman in her fifties wearing a dark blue dress with gold trim, clutching her chest with one hand, walking towards her in an unfriendly manner.
She had a petite figure, and even though she was getting older, she was still well-proportioned, especially in that long dress, which showcased her figure nicely. Even Jennifer couldn't help but admire, the wife of this wealthy family was indeed different.
As the woman settled into the mahogany chair and scrutinized Jennifer, she realized that something seemed off. If this woman was the old man's wife, then what was she? A concubine?! Before she could scream, the woman sharply said, "You don't even know how to show respect to your in-laws? Is that how your mother taught you?"
Jennifer was surprised, her mouth agape. That old man was her father-in-law? She was glad she didn't say anything just now and quickly closed her mouth. Her mother had mentioned that her mother-in-law was not easy to serve, and now it seemed she was indeed a formidable character. She lowered her head and dared not speak, losing all the courage she had just mustered.
Mrs. Sophia coughed lightly. "Scarlett, she's young and ignorant. Have you also become senile? Where's the wine? Hurry and bring it."
Scarlett, changing her previous arrogance, obediently retreated and soon brought the wine. Mr. Anderson smiled and said, "Our son hasn't returned yet, so it's too early to toast now."
"Do I have the final say, or do you?" Mrs. Sophia snapped back. "Don't forget that you promised me something when you let this girl in! It's not so easy to enter the Anderson family!"
Mrs. Sophia seemed to have a strong bias against Jennifer, glaring at her with hatred, as if it would never dissipate. Jennifer felt scared, but she still had to hand the wine to Scarlett. She respectfully brought it to Mr. William and Mrs. Sophia. Mr. William was about to accept it when Mrs. Sophia sternly said, "Kneel down when you offer the wine to your in-laws!"
"Yes!" Jennifer answered in a low voice, obediently kneeling on the marble floor, which had no carpet. Her knees hurt, but she had to endure it.
Mr. William took the wine. "We didn't prepare a red envelope today. We'll make up for it another day." His kind smile no longer made Jennifer feel repulsed; instead, it brought her comfort.
"What red envelope? Don't they already have enough of our money? Greedy!" Mrs. Sophia took the wine, paused in mid-air for a while, and just as Jennifer looked up, Mrs. Sophia poured the warm wine onto Jennifer's face. The wine glass crashed onto the floor, making a harsh sound against the marble. "Both the mother and daughter are seductive vixens! Let me tell you, Jennifer, don't even dream of living a peaceful life in the Anderson family!"
