I Started

I stared at the red-eyed owl badge in my hand, my breath still coming in ragged gasps. Marcus’s dangerous tone pierced through the ringing in my ears. Open war. I squeezed the badge until its sharp edges dug into my palm. "We’re going home," Marcus said. His voice was like stone. He took my hand, pulling me away from the mangled car and the gathering crowd. His face was dark, his jaw set tight. We took a taxi in a heavy, stifling silence. Marcus did not let go of my hand, and his grip felt strangely like a sanctuary. Once we reached the apartment, Marcus wasted no time. He opened a large digital map on his study wall. It was the same map of New York I had seen before, but now it was teeming with glowing red points. "Miller sent over new details," he said. His voice was calm, but his eyes burned. "This isn't just a personal vendetta, Ava. This is a full-scale coup." I nodded, stepping closer to the map. "The Moreau and Monroe families. I read the old files. A land dispute decades ago that ruined the Moreaus. They never let it go." "Exactly. And now they’re aiming for the heart of everything your father and mine built." Marcus pointed to a skyscraper in the center of the map, the headquarters of Hayes Corporation. "A hostile takeover. Next week. During the annual shareholders' meeting." "Next week? That’s incredibly fast." I felt the adrenaline surging again. "How did Moreau get the meeting schedule?" Marcus turned his tablet to show a photo. Scarlet Monroe. She was smiling, posing beside several high-ranking Hayes Corporation executives. It all made sense. She wasn't just manipulating Caleb. She was spying on him. "Scarlet isn't just a pawn," Marcus continued, his voice thick with controlled fury. "She’s Moreau’s primary mole in our inner circle. She knows every schedule, every security flaw. And she used Caleb to get close." "Caleb." My voice caught. I remembered the look of sheer terror on his face at the charity event. "He really was forced into this?" "Miller confirmed it. Caleb was blackmailed. His family, his reputation. Moreau threatened to expose family secrets that would destroy everything if Caleb didn't help frame you and weaken Don Robert." Marcus looked at me. "Your father doesn't realize how deep this goes." "We have to tell him," I said, my resolve hardening. "I already have." Marcus gave a thin, grim smile. "He’s waiting at the primary base." The primary base. It was a name I had heard my father mention for years, but I had never seen it. It was a place that was more than an executive office, more than a home. That night, we met my father in a secret underground bunker hidden behind a derelict warehouse in Queens. The scent of damp concrete and cold metal filled the air. My father sat at a long table, surrounded by stern-faced men. He looked tired, but his eyes still held that unshakable authority. "So, Moreau thinks he can topple the Hayes empire?" my father said. His tone was ice-cold. He looked at us both. "And the two of you nearly got yourselves killed playing detective." "We found the proof, Father," Marcus said, handing over the tablet. "Scarlet is the key. She’s the one leaking the shareholder meeting details." Father studied the tablet, his jaw tightening. "So Caleb Reed was... truly just bait?" I swallowed hard. "Yes, Father. He was coerced." Father let out a long breath. "Fine. Here is the plan. Marcus, prep your team at Hayes Corp. Ava, you will be our lure. Scarlet cannot know her cover is blown." A lure. My stomach churned, but I didn't flinch. I wasn't going to run anymore. Two days later, the moment arrived. The Hayes Corporation building stood tall in the morning sun, showing no outward sign of the turmoil within. In the lobby, I spotted Scarlet Monroe. She wore a vibrant red dress, standing beside Caleb. Caleb looked paler than usual, his eyes darting toward Scarlet like a prisoner watching his guard. Scarlet smiled a triumphant, practiced smile. "Ava," she greeted, her voice sweet like poisoned honey. "I didn't expect to see you at such a serious event. Where is your new husband?" I forced a cold smile. "Marcus is busy with more important matters. I didn't want to miss this." I looked at Caleb. "How are you, Caleb?" Caleb only gave a stiff nod, avoiding eye contact. "Let’s head in," Scarlet said, pulling on his arm. Her eyes flashed a warning. We went up to the main boardroom. Tension saturated the air. Victor Moreau was already there, sitting in the head chair with a sly grin. My father and the other directors had gathered. The meeting began. Moreau moved quickly, launching his arguments backed by data Scarlet had clearly provided. He accused my father of fraud and stock manipulation, presenting expertly forged documents. The shareholders began to murmur, growing restless. "Your father is old, Ms. Hayes," Moreau said. His gaze swept over me, full of mockery. "It’s time this empire was held by more capable hands." "I disagree," I said loudly, breaking the silence. "Your evidence is inaccurate, Mr. Moreau." Moreau laughed. "Oh, really? And what would you know about it, Ms. Ava?" Marcus stepped through a side door, walking in with a quiet confidence. Detective Miller and a security detail followed closely behind. "She knows a great deal, Moreau," Marcus said. His voice was as cold as surgical steel. "Because she’s the one who uncovered your entire game." Moreau’s expression shifted. Scarlet gasped, her grip on Caleb loosening. "What is this?" she demanded. "A diversion," Marcus replied, turning his tablet toward the room. On the screen, CCTV footage showed Scarlet secretly inserting a flash drive into the CFO’s computer days earlier. "All of your 'evidence,' Moreau, is the result of manipulation and stolen data funneled through Ms. Monroe." Chaos erupted. Moreau’s men, disguised among the shareholders, stood up. Some reached for weapons. However, the doors suddenly locked shut. From the opposite entrance, my father’s men stormed in, led by my father himself. He had a murderous look in his eyes. They surrounded the room. "You thought you could steal from the King, Moreau?" my father sneered, drawing a pistol from his jacket. "You were dead wrong." The first shot rang out. The room turned into a battlefield. I dove behind a marble table, Marcus pulling me down with him. The sound of bullets whistling overhead was deafening. "Stay here!" Marcus yelled, but I had already seen an opening. Caleb was standing there, looking lost in the middle of the crossfire as Scarlet tried to drag him away. "Caleb!" I screamed. Scarlet saw me, her eyes burning with hatred. She lugged Caleb toward the emergency exit. Caleb tried to resist, but he was too weak. "I won't let them go!" I stood up, grabbing a pistol that had fallen from one of Moreau’s men. Marcus reached for my arm, but I was already moving. "They aren't getting away!" I ran down the corridor, trailing Scarlet and Caleb. The gunfire faded behind me. Scarlet managed to shove the emergency door open, pulling Caleb onto the stairs. I caught up to them on the landing. "Let him go, Scarlet!" I yelled. She turned, her eyes wild. "He’s mine! Your plan failed, Ava. Moreau will have his revenge!" Suddenly, Caleb yanked his arm back with a final burst of strength. Scarlet lost her balance, stumbling, and I lunged at her. We tumbled down several steps together. A sharp pain shot through my shoulder, but it was nothing compared to the rage inside me. Scarlet tried to claw at me, but I shoved her back. Marcus appeared at the top of the stairs, his face tight with worry. "Ava!" Scarlet saw Marcus and panicked. She pushed me aside and tried to scramble up, but Caleb suddenly kicked her feet out from under her. Scarlet fell again, this time hitting her head against the wall. She slumped over, unconscious. Caleb panted heavily, looking at me with eyes full of guilt. "Ava, I..." I couldn't help it. I stepped closer, tears blurring my vision. "Why, Caleb? Why did you let this happen?" He looked down. "I was afraid. They threatened my family, Ava. They said I’d be dead if I didn't help." Marcus reached us. He didn't say a word. He just took my hand and pulled me close, as if trying to shield me from the pain. I looked at Caleb. My heart was still broken, but there was a flicker of understanding now. He had been a helpless victim. The police on my father’s payroll, along with Thorne’s security agents, arrived at the stairwell. They handcuffed the unconscious Scarlet. Moreau and his men had already been apprehended in the boardroom. The fight was over. I collapsed into Marcus’s arms. His hand stroked my hair, steadying me. "It’s over, Ava." "I know," I whispered, warm tears tracking down my cheeks. "But." I looked up at him. His dark eyes, once so cold, now radiated warmth and pride. He was my strength. He was my partner. Our bond, which had begun as a pretense, had been forged in fire and blood. It had become something far stronger than I ever imagined. Standing in the lobby with my father, we watched the agents lead a battered Victor Moreau away. He glared at me, his eyes full of spite. "This isn't the end, Hayes. This empire will fall sooner or later!" I didn't flinch. I held Marcus’s hand tighter. This dark world was cruel, full of endless intrigue and danger. But standing with Marcus, I was ready to face it. We were Hayes-Thorne. And this was only the beginning. Would you like me to help you draft an epilogue for their story, or perhaps a scene showing the aftermath of the merger?
