Annalise POV
"Stay," I repeat. "Please."
With my hand outstretched, I reach out to my Alpha, waiting.
“Annalise,” Kane's voice is low and soft, his back hunched as he stands still with his back turned towards me, "I’ll be just outside the door. I’ll keep you safe,” just turning his head, his blue eyes glow briefly as he adds, “I’ll always keep you safe. And right now, the best way I can do that is to leave.”
Speechless, I watch as he walks away from me, the door closing silently behind him, my heart falling into my gut as I hear him settle onto the couch just a wall away from me.
“I tried,” I sigh, curling up into bed. I know he’s right, that I shouldn’t have asked him to stay if I wasn’t ready to take up his offer to be his Luna. I know that’s what he wants.
