Chapter Forty-Five TV cameras lined up outside the polling place, and men walking around inside and outside the building had curly wires protruding from beneath their collars and plugged into their ears. It was obvious that Election Day was in full swing. Everything was in place for Davis and his wife to show up and cast their votes. If the polls were correct, the popularity difference between the two candidates was as much as 16%, and the election itself was a mere formality. When the stage was all set, as if on cue, Davis and his wife arrived in their bulletproof limousine, complete with police and Secret Service escorts. After making sure that he was on camera, Davis pushed his wife in her wheelchair past the waiting throng of voters, and into the building where they cast their ballot
