Chapter Fifty-Six
Carol was the first of the group to get the news of Kostchenko’s death and Michaels’ disappearance. The information was in an encrypted message received from Moscow. She immediately showed it to Betty, who sat in shock as she absorbed its contents. The conspiracy’s access to support cells had been severed. As a precautionary measure, Moscow would have no further contact with her because the situation was becoming too unstable. The suicide of the lead KGB agent in the operation seemed to create a maybe-we-should-rethink-this attitude among the members of the Politburo.
