The sun heats my face. It’s not spring yet, so I close my eyes and enjoy the unexpected warmth. My horse, Pomelo, snorts nearby, and it comforts me to know that I’m not fully alone. I grew up in a more suburban area. Since my mom married my stepdad, and we moved to his ranch, I’ve enjoyed all the country has to offer. Riding Pomelo is definitely my favorite thing about living in the wide open space. I pull tighter on the sleeves of the flannel shirt I tied around my waist when I got too hot. My tank top isn’t quite warm enough, but I’m not willing to put the warmer shirt back on just yet. I let my hands float out at my sides to the edges of the small blanket I set down.
