THE MD

2 The whole building was in frenzy. The Managing Director would be addressing the staff of the company. Everyone was fidgeting. They all want to look their best before the despotic faultfinding, obnoxious MD. No one wanted to be a victim of his degrading comments and awful temper. Besides, no one wanted to be dismissed from work nor have his salary withheld. The entire staff of Trust insurance Plc was settled in the conference hall of the company. Silence reigned in the hall as every employee was in his world thinking about what the subject matter of the meeting could be. Everyone was on their feet as the MD liked them to be because he had once dismissed an employee for sitting while he was addressing them. Then everyone started perceiving the advancing footsteps of the one they have been waiting for. He was not in a hurry. He entered the conference hall with two corporately dressed men behind him. "Good morning, Mr. Williams" The entire staff greeted unanimously. "Good morning, everyone" Mr. Williams replied. Mr. Richard Williams was a twenty-two-year-old power-drunk interim Managing Director of the company. His frail old father who was the Managing Director had pleaded with the Board of Directors to allow his son to manage the company on his behalf. Richard was also a staunch playboy who on countless times mixed work with pleasure. Now, he was on a cobalt two-piece suit with a polka-dotted blue tie matching his blue slim fitted trousers and Santon black shoes. He sauntered in front of the hall with an air of authority and power. "...to get the company running smoothly. I also realized that our account records aren't properly vetted. I mean, a customer spotted a few errors made in the premium he has been paying to our company" Richard announced phlegmatically. "Who did the auditing for Ifeanyi and Sons Ltd?" He demanded. "It is I, sir" Stella replied raising her hand amid the crowd. "Come forward" Stella stepped out of the crowd turning deaf ears to the sad murmurs and whispers around her. "So tell me, Mrs...?" "Miss Chukwu" "Miss Chukwu, what happened to the account of Ifeanyi and Sons?' "I failed to detect the errors in the account but after it was brought to my notice, I rectified it" Stella replied brazenly. Richard was impressed by her courage. Usually, employees fidget before him whenever he asked them a question like that. Then, he will snap and fire them. "Let it not happen again. We almost lost a customer because of your mistake" He let her off with a warning. "It won't, sir" Stella promised. "See me in my office after the meeting" Richard ordered. "Yes, sir" "As I was saying, we all need to be cautious..." *** The throng of people that encircled Stella hinder her from concentrating on her work. Everyone was shocked at the manner Mr. Williams dismissed her error. "What portion did you use on him?" One employee demanded. "Why did he just wave off your mistake?' Another queried. "Guys!" Stella shouted. "I need to go and meet Mr. Williams now. When I get back, I will answer all your questions" Stella promised. She left the office and walked toward the elevator with an air of pride. She pushed the open button on the elevator door and entered. An oddly dressed man carrying a brown bag rushed into the elevator before the door shut closed. Stella scrutinized him with a puzzling look. Whoever the man is, he surely hasn't heard of the word "fashion", Stella thought. "Where are you going?" She inquired. "The second floor" The man replied. She pushed the '2' button among the array of buttons that was by the corner of the elevator. "So what do you think about the meeting?" Stella tried to start a conversation. "What meeting?" The man was puzzled. "The general meeting with Mr. Williams, of course "Oh, I missed it. I'm just coming to work" The man divulged. She was puzzled. No employee dared to miss a meeting with Mr. Williams. If he ever finds out about anyone absent at the meeting, he would fire the absentee instantly. "Who are you?" Stella questioned shocked at the levity with which the man used to regard the meeting. The elevator dinged and the door opened. The man stepped out of the elevator. "I am John" He replied. *** The elevator on the fifth floor dinged and Stella walked out of it. She strolled to the Managing Director's office wondering what Mr. Williams called her for. The secretary's corner was void of people. Brown files were neatly arranged on the secretary's table in front of an LG computer. Stella presumed that the secretary stepped out briefly. She continued her short journey to the MD's office which was a few distances away from her. She knocked on the door gently at first. Then, she knocked harder on the second and third times. She shrugged and proceeded to open the door. A woman sat on the broad desk backing the door and moaning erotically with her two hands firmly at the back of Richard. Richard's hands were behind the woman. His trousers and underwear were below his knees. He grunted and gasped as he thrust rapidly in the woman. He raised his head and noticed Stella watching them. "Get out! Out!!" He barked. Stella was too stunned to speak. She ran out of the office instantly. She didn't care to use the elevator this time. Rather, she ran down the stairs. On her way, she collided with John who was carrying a box of files. The box hit the ground making the files disperse on the ground. "Oh, I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry" Stella fidgeted. She crouched and picked up the files back into the box. John crouched with her but he didn't pick up any file. Rater, he gazed at her intently. Stella arranged the files into the box before raising her head to look at the person she collided with. "John?!" She was baffled. "Hi" He muttered. He carried the box and headed toward the office on the floor. Stella was bereft of words. She watched him go into the office before proceeding to her office on the first floor.
