It seemed determined to punish my frivolity by concentrating its super-heated rays on Julia’s unfortunate lilies. I sat in the driver’s seat and lifted the bunch in careful fingers. The heavy bulbous heads bobbed within the plastic wrapper, their stalks arched and lolling like the necks of dead swans. Rage mingled with sadness to create a suffocating potion in my chest. I lacked the energy to drive back to the supermarket and replace them. Settling the flowers on the seat with the tenderness of a parent, I drove home to my eyrie in the mountains. A dry patch represented the space where Julia’s Mercedes had sheltered the driveway
