Chapter 11: First Arrival at the School

885 Words
Aurelian and the Witches The road to the school wound through a forest so old it felt like it had been there forever. Mist clung to the ground, curling around tree roots and stones like it didn’t really want anyone passing through. From the carriage window, Aurelian watched the trees thin out. In the distance, silver towers rose against the sky. Seris ran her fingers over the runes carved into the inside of the carriage. “Everything here feels calculated,” she murmured. Elowen rolled her eyes. “Great. So we’re being judged before we even step inside.” Aurelian smiled at them. Their back-and-forth always steadied him. No matter how big things felt, they were still just the three of them. When the school finally came into full view, it didn’t look like just a building. It felt important. Like something life-changing was about to start. And somehow, Aurelian could feel it in the air. Lucien and the Vampires Lucien arrived on horseback. He stepped down carefully, boots hitting the stone steps with a sharp sound. The place was impressive — tall gothic spires, carved archways, delicate patterns in the stonework. Wards shimmered faintly in the sunlight if you looked closely. Students were already gathering in the courtyard. Witches stood in small groups, eyes sharp and observant. Wolves carried themselves differently — steady, grounded. Then he saw her. Aurora. She looked tense but composed, hands folded close to herself like she was holding something in. Their eyes met briefly. It wasn’t long, but it was enough. Curiosity. Maybe challenge. Lucien looked away first, his expression calm again. Whatever this place was going to demand from him, he planned to stay in control. Aurora and the Wolves Aurora’s stomach hadn’t settled since they arrived. Stepping onto the courtyard stones felt like walking into a room where everyone had already decided something about her. She tried to breathe slowly. Destiny doesn’t wait for readiness. That’s what her father always said. A silver-haired witch passed by, muttering something too quiet to catch. Aurora stiffened, but Nyra squeezed her shoulder gently. Kaelen gave her a steady look that said you’re fine. The school smelled like stone, polished wood, and something electric under the surface. Wolves were sparring nearby. Somewhere else, magic hummed softly. Excitement and fear tangled together in her chest. And under that, something else. Hope. Arrival in the Great Hall The Great Hall was enormous. Sunlight poured through tall glass windows, spilling across polished floors. Faint magical patterns shimmered along the walls and ceiling if you stared long enough. Long tables were arranged in rings, each marked with the symbol of a different kingdom. The Headmistress stood at the front. Tall, layered robes, calm expression. She didn’t need to raise her voice to command attention. “Welcome,” she said evenly. “You are here to learn. But more than that, you are here to understand one another.” “Every action here matters. Alliances will form. Rivalries too. Choose wisely — even when you don’t yet understand what you’re choosing.” Elowen muttered under her breath, “So… destiny with supervision. Fantastic.” Seris hid a small smile. “It was never going to be simple.” Exploring the School Afterward, the students were allowed to explore. Aurelian and his sisters wandered through corridors lined with glowing runes. Classrooms were filled with strange instruments and floating diagrams. The library shelves stretched so high they disappeared into shadow. “The wards are layered,” Seris whispered, brushing her fingers near a rune. “They can sense magic. Maybe even intent.” Elowen grinned. “Let’s hope they don’t read sarcasm.” Across the courtyard, Lucien watched quietly. Vampires, wolves, witches — all sharing space, but not quite mixing. Every glance carried meaning. Every conversation could become something more. He noticed who seemed confident. Who seemed nervous. Who looked dangerous. Aurora walked with Kaelen and Nyra, trying to take everything in. The place felt alive in a way she couldn’t explain. She wanted to feel her wolf — to feel something powerful and certain inside her. But there was still only quiet. She wondered how many others felt that same emptiness. First Lesson: Restraint By afternoon, they were called back outside. Their first exercise was simple in theory: weave their magic together across kingdoms. Aurelian Lucien and Aurora come forward. Aurora said "I can't do it" even when is nervous. Aurelyi stepped forward, focusing on the rhythm of energy around him. Lucien moved with precise, controlled motions. while kaelen decide to replace his sister magic sparked unevenly strong but unsteady. It should have flowed. It didn’t. Lucien’s sharp control clashed with Aurelian’s smoother style. kealean energy surged unexpectedly, forcing both of them to adjust. For a brief moment, it felt like an invisible thread connected the three of them. Not separate powers. Interlocked ones. “Focus,” the Headmistress said calmly as she walked among them. “Unity isn’t the absence of tension. It’s learning how to hold it without breaking.” Slowly, awkwardly, the magic steadied. Not perfect. But stable enough. It was a start. By nightfall, the moon hung pale over the school. Silver light washed over the towers, the courtyard, and the students who didn’t yet realize how much their lives had just shifted.
