Chapter 2

SERAPHINA POV "It's so lovely to have you all here." My dad started again as I sat at the round table filled with other wealthy socialites who kept stealing glances at me. I faced my food, eating calmly and peacefully, unbothered about anything as my dad went on. "Ladies and gentlemen, tonight is a special night for another reason," he announced. "Sera, my darling, please come forward" I couldn't hide the frown on my face when I heard him call out my name. Like, what's he calling me for? But still I had no choice but to obey. I dropped the cutlery and stood up slowly before taking elegant steps towards him. "This is Seraphina Valentine...my lovely and adorable daughter, one whom, without, I am incomplete," he said, placing his hands over my shoulders as everyone smiled warmly. But I'm too corrupt to know it's all fake. "My daughter has always been abiding by my rules, always indoors, prefers keeping to herself, doesn't like too many gatherings, and hates too many questions being thrown at her...." "Of course she's my daughter, and I know her a lot. That's why I'm doing this for her" I stared at my father, wondering what he was about to do for me. He's been saying too much about me, and it's unlike him to preach about me to everyone, so whatever it is....I feel I wouldn't like it. "I would like to formally announce the engagement of my daughter, Seraphina Valentine, with the Moretti son, Levi!" Everyone immediately rose and started clapping while I remained frozen in shock. I couldn't believe this…I couldn't believe my father was finally using me as an alliance tool. If it was any other day, I would have been so grateful; I would have jumped on my dad and given him the biggest kiss on his cheek, but not today. Now being announced as Levi's bride makes me feel awful. Because I've studied him too well to know he's a playboy, and I will be the very thing he wouldn't value, and I don't want that. "Congratulations, Mr. Valentine!" They all rushed forward and started congratulating me and my dad while my eyes fell on him. Levi. A frown was vivid on his face, and I scoffed before looking away. I've finally been used as a tool by my father to secure an alliance, and I couldn't say how hurt I was that I felt like crying. Firstly, the tightness and discomfort of my heels made me want to shed tears along with the betrayal from my dad. "Tell me something." Levi's voice cut through the noise around us, and I looked up. "What?" "Did you beg your father for this?" A mocking smile appeared on his face; my jaw tightened as I narrowed my eyes at him. "Excuse me?" He slid his hands into his pockets. "The engagement. Everyone knows you've had a crush on me for years" The words stung me more than they should have as anger surged through me. "I figured you finally got tired of waiting." His mouth twitched into a smug smile as the words rolled off his tongue. I stared at him blankly. Was this really the man I'd spent years admiring? I'm such a fool then. "You think I asked for this?" I bit out, my glare hard enough to cut. "Didn't you?" His smile widened, a laugh slipped past my lips, hollow and humorless, sounding so unfamiliar that even I almost didn't recognize it. "You're even more arrogant and useless than people say," I retorted. His smirk thinned, the amusement drained from his eyes. "And you're not nearly as impressive as I imagined," he sneered. For the first time all night, Levi looked genuinely annoyed, and I liked it. "Congratulations, Levi," I said, stepping around him. "On what?" A confused frown formed on his face. "On being handsome enough to fool everyone into thinking you have some brains." With that, I gave him no room to recover, turned on my heel, and put as much distance between us as I could. I got outside, going in search of my father. He needed to take back his words because I would rather die than marry that arrogant bastard. There wasn't a trace of my dad, although I saw him heading out with his men, so where could he have gone? I walked to my right, turning to a corner, and then I saw him ahead. I opened my mouth to call out his name when I heard. "Kill them all!" His tone this time around was cold and void of any emotions. This was my father's ruthless side that I knew of. "And the kids?" One of them asked. "Kill them as well; they will rebel against us when they grow of age," my father ordered, and blood immediately drained out of my face. I knew my father was a monster, but not one who would murder kids. I tiptoed out of the corner, afraid of being seen by him. But why would he want those kids dead? Because he doesn't want them to rebel against him when they grow up, and that's a perfect reason to end their lives now? This is one reason why I don't want to involve myself with their bloody lifestyle, because I will never understand them. Suddenly, a black BMW car pulled up in front of me, and the car door was pushed open, and someone stepped out with a mask on his face. Before I could comprehend who he was, his hands fell on my mouth, and he held both my hands and handcuffed me so swiftly and smoothly. I struggled as fear crept into me, but he didn't shake. He looked unfazed, and the way he stared at me made me feel like I had seen that look before. He removed his hands from my mouth and threw me over his shoulders. "Help!" "Somebody help me!" I screamed at the top of my voice. "Fire everyone and let that old man know that his princess is being taken!" He commanded before throwing me into the car, and then it dawned on me that I was being abducted. And whoever my abductor was showed he wouldn't let me go unless he got what he wanted. But will he ever get what he wants?
