Chapter 5

SERAPHINA POV I hated them, every single one of them. The Bratvas, the guards positioned outside my room, the men who had dragged me back here after my failed escape, and especially the two brothers who had shattered every ounce of trust I had. I sat on the edge of the bed with my arms folded tightly across my chest. My mind replayed the scene over and over again. Roman. The man from the gala. The man who had smiled at me and one who had looked normal. Yet he'd stood there and watched me get captured. Worse! He had stopped me from even escaping a while ago. The betrayal stung more than I cared to admit. Not like we're friends, and I know him, but still I felt betrayed. A knock sounded on the door, and I ignored it because the door would open anyway, and of course it did. Kidnappers weren't exactly known for respecting privacy, so yeah. The masked twin with dark hair, Viktor, whom I heard, stepped inside. My eyes immediately went to his bandaged hand, and a tiny spark of satisfaction lit inside me. Good! At least the bastard felt some pain. His dark gaze landed on me as he shut the door behind him. "You seem pleased with yourself," he started. “Of course,” I shrugged. I noticed the tightness of his jaw, and I guess he didn't like being mocked. Well, that's good. I don't like being kidnapped either. So we are even. For a moment, neither of us spoke as the tension increased. Then Viktor slowly approached. Every instinct screamed at me to move or run, but I refused. I wouldn't give him the satisfaction of knowing that I'm scared of him. He stopped directly in front of me and said, "Let's try this again" "Try what again?" I asked confusedly. "The part where you answer my questions, princess," he answered, and I laughed bitterly. Now they both call me princess. "Why don't you let me do this? You let me leave first, then we can chat on the phone. How's that?" That earned me a dark smile from him. The kind that promised trouble. "You're not leaving," and that sounded like a finality. "Then you're not getting whatever answers you need from me then." That was my finality as well. Silence reigned, and then he crouched slightly until our eyes met. "Tell me about your father," he demanded with a not-so-friendly tone. So this is the real reason. So this had never been about me but about my father. "What about him?" I asked. "Everything you know." That made me laugh. "You kidnapped the wrong daughter. I barely know half of what my father does," which was true. I know nothing about that man. "You expect me to believe that??" His expression darkened. "I don't mind what you believe," I scoffed. For a second, I thought he might lose his temper, but instead he stood straight, which somehow felt worse. "What do you know about the agreement?" Ok, now this is confusing. "What agreement?" I asked. His eyes searched mine like he was looking for a lie or looking for fear or something, but apparently he found neither. Because disappointment flashed across his face. "I don't know what you're talking about or what you want from me" He studied me for several seconds before speaking again, "Your father made a promise" "A lot of people make promises." I frowned because that wasn't a good reason. "This one involved us, my father and the Bratvas." He said, his voice a little higher. His father? So there's an elder Bratva? My father had dealings with countless organizations like businessmen, politicians, mafia families, enemies, and allies, but still none of that explained why I was here. "Then take it up with him, not me!" I scoffed, not ready to believe in any sentimental words. "We intend to." His expression darkened, and the way he said it sent chills down my spine. Before I could respond, the door opened again, and he entered... Roman. The other twin with red hair. My chest tightened instantly. I hated that my body still reacted whenever I saw him, maybe because I'm a fool. His gaze briefly met mine before shifting to Viktor. "How's your hand?" He asked, inspecting it, only to get a cold glare from Viktor. "You should've seen your face earlier." Roman looked entirely too amused. A small smile played at the side of his lips. "I'll break yours next!" Viktor growled. "Good luck with that," He chuckled. The exchange almost felt normal, like they weren't criminals or mafia and like I wasn't their prisoner. Roman leaned against the wall as his attention settled on me. I looked away first, refusing to let him see how angry I was. "Anything yet?" He asked. "No!" "Because I don't know anything," I snapped angrily. Neither of them responded, which irritated me even more. Before I knew it, he grabbed my hand and yanked me forward roughly. "You really need to watch your tone, princess; I'm not a soft guy!" His voice was dead cold, and I gulped hard in fear. "Your dickhead father made us a promise and an agreement, which he's forgetting," He continued, pulling me closer as his hot breath fanned my face. "What agreement and promise are you talking about??" I asked. I felt his other hand on my hair as he played with it, and that made me more scared because now he was acting like a psychopath. "When the time comes, you'll know, so quit the attitude; it isn't intimidating." He let go of me and turned around, heading towards the door. 'You people are f*****g insane; you guys are crazy....crazy as hell. Just let me go; that's all I ask for. Whatever it is, face my dad, not me. Face Russell Valentine, not Seraphina Valentine!!!!' I screamed in my head, not daring to voice that aloud. Roman followed Viktor, then I heard it. "The contract should have been fulfilled thirty years ago if your father wasn't a d**k" I froze in shock. Contract? Thirty years ago? What contract??? Before I could ask, Viktor shot Roman a warning look, and the conversation ended immediately. The two brothers disappeared through the door, and I was left alone again in my thoughts. Hours later, a tray of food arrived, which I ignored because I didn't have the appetite. But then I noticed something tucked beneath the plate. A folded piece of paper. I waited until the guard left, then I went for it and unfolded it. Three simple words stared back at me. "Don't provoke Viktor" No signature was added, nor was an explanation just that one line. But I already knew who wrote it...Roman. I crumpled the note in my hand and tossed it aside. I should have hated him; maybe I did. Yet as I replayed the message, one thought refused to leave my mind. For the first time since my kidnapping, I wasn't sure which brother was more dangerous. The one who openly threatened me is Viktor. Or The one who pretended not to care, which is Roman.
